An ever improving course with good greens, the best condition it has been in for 2014 and a credit to the hard working ground staff and friendly reception service. The public do have a right of way and some dog owners ignore the sings but this does not spoil what amounts to great value for money. A great place for people starting out playing the game under supervision and whilst largely flat still a testing course. Connected to the club is a members section with down to earth friendly people without old fashioned snobbery but nevertheless organised and professional.Old Hall serves as a good 19th hole to general public.

Altrincham The comments about non golfers are very accurate , the dog walkers are a real menace despite the signs they let their dogs run all over the place off the lead , and the owners walk the wrong way up the fairways without even looking , they don't stick to the paths ans if you say anything they say "it's municipal" as if that matters , they sem to think their council tax subsidises it so they can do what they like when in fact the course is owned by a trust and no money comes from the council. As well as dog walkers people amble across the course without looking as if they own it. It's a shame as the course is generally good apart from these idiots

Played here recently and enjoyed it. Walked up and paid £14 to play + strokesaver for £2.95 although there are a couple of bunkers not marked on the stroke saver. The course was in good condition, the greens were excellent with consistent pace and running very true. The only slight complaint about the greens would be that with the exception of 3 that I can think of they were very flat and an easy 2 putt from anywhere on the green or fringe. There was pretty good signage for the next tee which made it easier for a first visit. Fairways were generally wide and pretty forgiving - never having played here before and coming off a bad round at my own club I still managed par to handicap so probably not the most difficult of courses but the stroke index 1 par 5 requires some thought to play it - as does the 16th. The comments about non golfers on the course - yes there were but they were pretty respectful (including the school children) and didn't spoil the enjoyment and unlike some private courses I've played there were no signs of vandalism or damage to the course so I think it's a non issue although the litter on the course was a bit of a shame. Definitely worth the money and would happily take other golfers there.

I have to say that i saw the previous report and thought bit harsh. I played Altrincham for the first time this year and had a really enjoyable experience. I was chatting to a member of 20 years and he reckons this season it has been in the best condition ever! He said that a lot of the members who went to private courses when the course was in poor condition under the council are returning as the greens are better at Altrinchan than their private course! I found the course in really good condition, played in September and thought it was an intersting layout especially the back 9. I played on a Monday and the green fee is only £6.25!! They also operate their own 2 for 1 scheme so you dont need to use your vouchers, save them for another day, although there are time restrictions so make sure you are aware. I agree with the report regarding the dog walkers which I mentioned to the shop staff. They reckon the course wardens will have a greater presence in future which should help. All in all I think this is a really good municipal and well worth a visit.

Very average I'd say. I've seen so many reviews, even in magazines, proclaiming this the best muni in the north. I don't know where they get that from. We found the course quite dull and repetative. Condition was OK, but nothing to write home about. Nice and flat if you don't like hills. LOTS of dog walkers who, unlike most other courses, just completely ignore the fact it's a golf course and there's golf in progress. All in all.. average. But there's much better munis and pay-and-plays around the region. Good facilities though. Final word of warning - the 2-for-1 schemes here are a complete rip-off. They only accept the vouchers on weekdays between 3 and 4pm. However.. when you turn up, you find that it's 2-for-1 between these times for everyone. So you bought a 2-fore-1 or Greenfree voucher for nothing.

great golf course, look easy but all greens are well protected by bunkers, so if you cant play lobwedge you could hit some high scores, also lot of water hazards via many creeks, the greens are in the best condition every, i play golf all over the conntry, and these greens are on a par or even better, well done to the green keeper.

Having read some reviews I was a bit sceptical but wanted to give it a go. We played there one evening and were hoping for a relaxing round after work. We were welcomed by friendly staff but ran into the 'non golfing type' before we reached the first tee. We were nearly knocked over by a grey hound that had been let loose by its owner so it could chase the squirrels around the course!! The second fairway was being used as a test track by remote-controlled cars and there were a group of youths hanging around the bridge by the fourth green which was slightly intimidating. After that it seemed to quieten down and we could then concentrate on our golf. The course itself is not too bad, the greens are good, but the main frustration was the inaccuracy of the scorecards. There are several holes that appear to be hazard free but in actual fact you'll find bunkers and water hazards as you play. It’s an average municipal course and reasonably priced but I agree with a previous review that recommends you go early to avoid the non golfing menaces.

Rather easy course but fantastic quality for a Municipal. The greens are 10/10.

For a municipal course at £13 for a round this does little wrong and a lot right. Played in October 06 on a busy Sunday and managed to go round with little waiting and relative piece and quiet. Some of the holes are a little dull and repetitive, but it is certainly challenging for the mid to high handicapper mainly due to length of some par 4s. There were some players who perhaps were not there for the game, more the drinking on the way round, but we weren't affected. One concern was the kids waiting at the furthest corner of the course to nick stuff from you (12th I think). They didn't get anything from us but others may not be so fortunate!

Played Altrincham early on a Saturday morning, this round was supposed to be my introduction to playing on a proper course. The locals seemed to have different ideas... Rude people at every turn.

I thought that I had played some 'iffy' courses in the past, but Altrincham comes out on top as the worst afternoon's golf that I have ever had. Golf etiquette was completely ignored. The constant shouts of fore were off-putting to say the least. Golf balls flew past our heads from every direction imaginable on every single hole. We were hit over by the following group on more than one occasion. There were other golfers playing in their jeans and football shirts and queues on every tee. If you were after a well-observed and respectful round of golf then stay away from here. If you want a laugh with your mates, then this course is for you. We walked off after 10 holes having had enough. I love this game and I have never finished a round early because I was downright irritated by other golfer's behaviour. I shall not return.

I have only been playing for a short while but in that time I have visited several clubs around this region. When I first visted the club it was on recommendation that this would be excellent for a beginner due to the fact that it was fairly flat. My first visit was well enjoyed the only thing that detracted slightly was the fact that a motorbike had been on several of the greens and produced green circles which obviously was a pain. There is a public right of way through the course but this is barely noticeable and certainly the public are aware of errant shots and basically they cause little distraction. There are dog walkers but they keep to the outskirt of the course and I have never seen a dog on fairway or green. Excellent value, excellent course.

Cheap course, but many shouts of fore. Dog walkers absolutely everywhere, not just on the footpaths but crossing fairways... Exceptional variation of holes and some interesting people. We saw a man on on a bike riding between shots drinking a can of stella!!!

Pound for pound, Altrincham must be among the best parkland courses in England. Lots of challenges and some interesting holes. It's looking really good a of March 2005

I wasnt impressed with the course even if it is a reasonably cheap muni. The greens were poor, often causing the ball to bobble erratically. Mat tees are often necessary in winter but these ones had big driving range type rubber tees! Also the outward nine including 8 consecutive par 4's doesnt make for very interesting golf. Perhaps it is better in the summer but I doubt I will return to find out.

A good course for the improving golfer(18+ Handicap). The greens aren't too great, but it is a municipal and sees lots of traffic. Fairways in good condition. Plenty of variation on the course. A good price for 18 holes for the standard of the course

This year Altrincham has come on beyond recognition! The greens have been as good as any private course in the area. The course represents a great challenge at very reasonable prices. Also I believe there are plans for refurbishments throughout. The course was very busy when I played but this was AM Saturday. If I went back I would play in the afternoon when there is a discount.

I found this course quite pleasant. There was a lot of dag walkers around, but apart from that I didn't think there was a particular problem with wayward balls or interference from other course users. The course is relatively flat and with few really awkward hazards. The most difficult ones are a couple of creeks that cross some of the fairways. As a beginner I found it a challenge, but it also left me with a feeling I can do a lot better than I did. So I will definitely try it again soon.

Altrincham Golf Course is the poorest course i've ever played on. There are constant shouts of fore all the time people wandering all about the course(errand golfers and many dog walkers) The greens were'nt great and You couldnt tell between fairway and rough. This is definately a course for a beginner or some friends who want a FUN round. Not worth wasting your 2-fore-1 voucher if you have one. There are better courses in the area e.g Hale which is a lovely wooded 9 hole parkland course and is kept in magnificent condition.

I played this course on Saturday Evening and thought it was great. They have a happy hour type 2 for 1 green fee. Cheap before this offer. It wasn't busy (we played at 5). The course was in great condition given the torrential rain the night before. It has challenges for everyone and with some wide fairways it's ok if you have a slice/hook and are sensible. I wasn't looking forward to the opening 9 not having a par 3 but given the variety I didn't notice. I thought the 16th was a great hole. Made you think about your approach to the green.

Posted by Chris Hughes on 22/07/2002

Very busy course but this is understandable as it is a municiple and reasonably priced. Right now (August 2000) there's a watertrap on almost every hole due to poor drainage and though work is taking place I doubt it will be finished before next summer. Greens could be in better condition and be prepared to abort any number of tee-shots due to errant golfers, dog-walkers, small children hunting for lake balls, etc., etc...

Posted by Dean Varney on 09/08/2000

Disappointing after the hype I had heard about the course. The fairways run too close to each other with very little in the way of boudaries. The result is that someone is always playing up your fairway in the wrong direction after their wayward tee shot. It was very busy resulting in long delays at most tees. We gave up on the fifteenth as the backlog was too long.
