Years ago I lived in Sheffield and played the municipal courses in the city but for some reason I never played at Birley Wood. Recently visiting friends in the city I had my first round here. I do have to say the place was in great nick considering how cheap it is to play. The course itself could certainly pass as a privately owned course. The place does perhaps lack stand out holes that the nearby Beauchief Muni has but there are no weak points and it is a pleasure to play. And surprisingly for an urban municipal course one side of the course faces out onto lovely countryside with some stunning views. Big congratulations to the green keepers for the condition of the place and to the Council for supporting the place. If I lived in Sheffield i would be so impressed with the membership offer which includes unlimited play here and at Tinsley and Beauchief in the city and the really excellent course at Chesterfield just to the south. In addition the membership offer includes unlimited use of a dozen gyms and half a dozen pools throughtout the city. All this for less then £500 per year - staggering value for money.

quite interesting to read a review from 4 years ago - basically my review would read the same ...nice course with a good mix of variety unfortunately the group behind us were a disgrace letting us know we were holding them up even though we were waiting for the groups in front of us ? then as the round went on we were subjected to the customary act of having golf balls fired at us from the tees as we waited for the greens to clear to take our second shots. All very silly really as it made us more determined to not let them past, the 1 and only time i have encounted intimidation and bullying tactics on a golf course ... still a nice course just let down by a group of idiots

Course is excellently prepared, not the most challenging. One or two greens not great (1st in particular). Unfortunately had problems with local players on a few occasions, which completely detract from all the positives. When deemed to be playing too slow despite keeping up easily with the group in front (Which oddly never let you through) it is customary to have shouts of disapproval from the group behind while putting and even balls fired at you to speed you up. All this when playing a 3.5hr round which in anyone’s book on a busy Saturday muni is a reasonable pace. So good course let down by the locals on numerous occasions

Ive played the course regularly and must give local golfers this advice.Because of its position and drainage this course is seldom not in play. In the winter months because of the quality of the greens, temps are seldom in use.It always seems playable ,when other courses have closed due to the weather. So if your desperate for you winter golf fix, always try Birley first,it always comes up smelling of roses. I have played at Birley Golf course a few times now, I am a beginner at golf but thoroughly enjoy it. Having only been to Birley I cannot comment on other courses or compare but I think Birley is a great course.

Interesting course with wonderful views, nice mixture of holes. But could do with some direrction markers for strangers visiting. Greens and fairways in good condition. Prices reasonable.

Played this course on 14/12/02. It was in excellent condition considering the recent weather. More expensive nearby courses are in worse condition than this. Credit to the groundstaff. Only one complaint, there are not enough course directions. Worth playing.

Being local to the course I have played Birley for approx 1 year. Compared with other, more expensive courses, I think Birley is excellent. For those who are reading this..I'd like to make a personal thanks to the staff who do a great job it the course up-keep. If you haven't tried Birley yet - try it!!

This may not be one of the best golf courses but if your a jounior or a begginer this is a fine place to start playing good enjoyable golf. They make you feel very welcome with fees at a very low (below 5 pounds for juniors) not a course for the player with a handicap below 20 but a good place for the one of. It has a bar called the Fairways a recently money has been spent wisely on the club.
