Played course recently. I was drawn by the fact it was a Herbert Fowler design ( he of Walton Heath and Berkshire fame). Found it in excellent condition . Despite the wet summer the fairways were firm and the greens true. It is a thinking man's course with positioning on the greens particularly important. The par 3s are not long but a real test. The Clubhouse has recently been refurbished and looks stunning. A warm welcome from staff too. Overall a very pleasant experience.
Played Hawksworth just this week and whether wise it was one of those special English days. Brilliant sunshine, beautiful evening shadows, and not too hot. Played with a friend who's a member (Collin), so only cost me a tenner! Course was generally in great nick, especially the fairways which were top draw. Some lovely holes with stunning views, particularly around the turn. Par 3 12th a highlight, especially as i hit my tee shot to within three foot, and closest i've come to hole in one. Definately a thinkers course, but plenty of room to make the round fun. Clubhouse view and ambience is very pleasant. Only critisism would be the greens. Don't think they had been cut for a few days and for me were painfully slow. I'm a member at Moor Allerton, so admit i'm spoilt with the greens there, but these were poor, and meant i didn't score a well from my 12 handicap, as some of my approach play deserved. That said would be happy to come back, and course much better option than neighbouring Hollin's Hall.
Some years since I last played and thoroughly enjoyed Hawksworth so I was delighted to return to play it this week on an early season Club trip. I've played quite a few courses in recent weeks and have found many a Clubs greens to be a little out of sorts, understandably for the time of year. These were without doubt the best greens I've played this season to date, a real credit to the Club considering we're only in mid April. Add to that the well manicured fairways, well maintained tee beds and bunkers and you have a course in very good nick indeed. The course layout is pretty much as I recall - some pretty tight fairways making straight hitting a must, something not necessarily achieved by our fourball on a regular basis on the day! The par3s are not particularly long but have small greens that are very well protected and not easy to get to. We found the greens and fairways very firm and quite bouncy, and quickly realised one of the more successful approaches to playing shots into the greens was to play a club shorter, pitching short of the green and running the ball on. Once on the greens, we found them pretty slick for the time of year and very true. A good read is needed as straight putts are few and far between. No monotonous golf here - a well thought out course layout means to score well a player must think about ball position more than be a "boom boom" golfer. Catering was good and excellent value for money, bar prices not ridiculous. We were made very welcome by the staff and pro. A good day all round.
The weather and conditions made it a pleasant round at a fairly early part of the season. The course is well maintained and appears to have benefitted from some adjustments to individual holes. Its a course where the 'thinker' will certainly benefit. Some interesting par 3' and long enough to be a test. Only downside being the relatively high cost for a round - £35.
