Played this course for the first time today, and I was impressed. This is a very challenging course, with underlations a plenty. The greens were imaculate condition, compared to say some of the more illustrious local courses. The par 4s seem to be very long par 4s and very dicieveing, the fairways were also in extremely good condition making iron play from them very easier (thats when I did land on the fairway), and all the greens were very quick and difficult to read. This course requires some strategy, not just a driver and a pitch. The tree lined fairways seem to drag you towards them making driving on some of the holes very difficult. Value for money at only £5 per round. Would certainly play again.
I played this course with a member at the weekend not knowing really what to expect though I had heard good things. My previous experience of 9 hole courses isn't great and the ones I've played are pretty lacklustre. Thankfully the same cannot be said for this course. This seems like a long course. The first hole is almost a baptism of fire and at over 400 yards is a challenging hole. Hole two is a short par 3 with a large oak drawing your attention from the green. The third is a short, very drivable par 4 hole but there's scope for disaster with OOB lurking to the right. The par 4 fourth looks a lot longer than the scorecard suggests but it's a tight fairway and an elevated green. The fifth again seems like a long par 4 with another tight fairway and interesting approach. Hole six is similar to the fourth but longer still and just as tight. Hole seven sees an interesting drop-off at the end of the fairway and into a dip from which the green is out of sight. The eighth is an odd hole - a short par 4 but plays a lot longer than the scorecard shows due to the green being perched on the top of a hill. The hole is drivable for big hitters but sadly not for me. Strategy is key on this hole. The ninth is a very long par 5 requiring a good tee shot to clear a ditch running across the fairway. Even then a good second shot is required to have any hope of getting GIR on a very interesting tiered green. I've been spoilt in recent years being a member of Mannings Heath Golf Club in Sussex which sports two 18 hole courses, the members course being a real beauty. However, the condition of the course and in particular the greens at Clayton Golf Club put my club to shame. All from a single keeper as well. Well done that man. In summary, this is a real gem of a course and a good test of golf. The members are very friendly and the club house and facilities more than adequate. Highly recommended
In August 2002 the couse was extended and it layout changed. The 1st is now a SSI1 par 4 440yds The 2nd a short par3 the 3rd is an acute dogleg right at the approach to the green. 4th, 5th, 6ht and 7th are tight tree lined par 4 the spion "kop" is now the 8th and the 9th is a 536yds par 5 dogleg left onto a mackenzie green.
