Great little course set in the highlands of Scotland. The course may seem like a short course with 9 holes (play twice for 18 obviously!) and no par 5's but it is far from easy! The course record sits at 2 over par and can be even trickier if the wind is up. On some holes depending on the wind direction you could expect to play a 2-iron for only a 160 yard par 3 at the signature 5th hole! Late in the year expect to play in all sorts of conditions in one round as what happened the last time I was up in October where we had sun, snow, sleet and rain in the same round! A lovely well-kept course in the Highlands of Scotland and one everyone must play! There is plenty of accommodation available as we stayed in a cottage on the course's estate.
I have wanted to play here for over thirty years and eventually managed to play this course in autumn and had a very pleasant round, the weather was kind and the fairways lush. Dr Alastair MacKenzie of Augusta National fame and James Braid are reported to have designed this course and it's use of the natural topography is excellent. There is ample variety ranging from a very long par 4's (which seemed much longer than the yardage given) to superb, short par 3's. One particular par 3 lies behind a small river so your club selection is key. If you chose to sample the delights of this wee gem, wait for a few dry days as it can be wet underfoot. It is also quite high and in is in a mountain setting so be prepared for mountain weather in winter and midges in summer. The hotel do well to maintain this course and while you would not expect championship quality I found the greens and general course maintenance very good. The hotel bar was warm, welcoming and very friendly, just ideal for completing the 19th.
Lovely 9-hole course, great scenery, very friendly staff at the castle. You must be prepared to walk the hills a bit, it can get rather steep, well kept course and if you like to play a round of golf in all tranquility - that's the place to go to! (At least when I was ther, I was the only one on the course)
