6 reviews of Dewsbury District Golf Club
Played here as part of a society package on 25th May 2010. A very friendly welcome, a well stocked pro shop and a well appointed clubhouse and changing area with friendly, accomodating members. The course is very challenging but it is a very good test of golf. Some holes are steep uphill slopes but obviously this is countered but some excellent downhill driving holes, in particular the par 4 14th which is like teeing off a cliff with views for miles across West Yorkshire. The course is well looked after and has a good variety of holes. Despite the hilly challenge it is a fair test of golf. Yes there is a run off on some fairways that may punish good shots but that is the beauty of golf, no two courses are the same. All in all a very good course, well maintained, an interesting layout and real ale in the clubhouse. What more does anyone want!
Played the course during tghe middle of August midweek on the 2 for 1 voucher scheme. An interesting but penal layout as the other reviews have stated, very hilly in parts, particularly the first few holes (a couple border on the ridiculous, especially the 2nd) with a lot of slopes so much so that well hit drives run off the fairway into punishing rough which bordered on the unfair on some of the holes, this would be a very difficult course if you draw the ball as most fairways slope severly right to left. Given the layout this is a course that needs to be played more than once to know where to put your tee shots. The course was in very good condition with quick & consistent greens. Very impressive clubhouse. Good value particularly on the 2 for 1 scheme but not a course i'd rush back to as i felt the layout punished too many good shots - there are better courses in the area for similar money.
I suspect that all of the previous comments are from golfers that play outside of Yorkshire! I have played much hillier courses than this. I thought it was a great test with some really interesting holes. New clubhouse so facilities excellent.
I never knew Dewsbury had a mountain range until I played here! This is a very very hard walk, and I'm not sure it's worth the effort. The first 7 or so holes are garbage, steep inclines, sloping lies, poor design etc. The back 9 is a little more interesting, in particular the downhill par 4 that is like looking down the ramp of a ski jump. It's worth playing here at least once purely for the experience and I've always found the course in good nick, especially the greens. Pro, staff and members seem friendly enough. The clubhouse was a disgrace the last time I played there ( it was raining and there were at least half a dozen buckets around the clubhouse to catch water coming through the leaking cieling!) but I believe they've built a brand new clubhouse since. If you have the constitution of a mountain goat this ones for you - 5.5/10
Very challenging but pleasant course, not for the weak hearted. I would recommend Sherpa Tenzing as a caddy.
First nine holes are all up hill & is not for the faint hearted. Tip: Take hiking boots & oxygen
