I played this course five weeks ago and found it to be one of the best kept courses I have played this season. Very good green, good fairways, firm bunkers and a difficult closing hole. I suggest giving it a try, as for the members if they don't want to speak to you, who cares, and if their etiquette is not up to standard put a ball through them, by accident of course, its not the fault of the management / farmers. What I can say is that I complimented the green keepers for the condition of the course and found it challenging and good fun to play, give it a try and make your own mind up, if you can.
Decided to treat myself and have a chilled out round one Saturday afternoon. Not a good experience, regardless of time of year. Friendly greeting in Pro Shop and that was it. Course was a bit wet, on it's own not a problem, but still having trollies on made everything boggy and walkways more like mud slides. Sand in bunkers was great, nice and fluffy, easy to play controlled greenside shots. Greens had been cored but still rolled quite nicely with a decent pace, although were very soft so if you stood in one place to long, you started sinking! Members were unfriendly with a severe lack of etiquette. Really spoiled the round to the extent we walked off. Complaints then fell on deaf ears. Not a good overall experience and won't be returning, nor would I recommend it to anyone.
The 18 hole is a tree lined park course which could be good but is sometimes like the wild west of courses. Players rarely seem to give way to faster and more capable players and this seems to characterise a course which meets local needs but doesn't often adhere to basic golfing protocols. Grass cutting is a further frustration. Machines seem to endlessly go up and down and cut across fairways; players fit around them not the other way around. To my mind the 9 hole is more attractive than the 18, which is rather bland. It's nearly May now and many of the greens are still pitted, perhaps after a dreadful winter, but pitted they are. Clubhouse is welcoming and good value but could do with upgrading. Bacon and sausages are great but the variety of options is limited. The course probably represents good value if you are prepared to accept the flaws.
Have played the West Course on numerous occasions, and like it for a good 9 hole challenge. The 18 hole course I found the most boring, forgettable experience imaginable! The West can be a little wet, but was dry and greens quite good for time of year. The challenge is middling, with the best holes the longish fourth, the dogleg fifth, and the downhill eighth. At ten pounds a good nine hole blow!
Played here with my society last year, liked it so much me and a friend joined!.quite a long course for us higher handicappers.but fair.the fairways are all tree lined but wide enough for all but the wildest of shots, the greens are very good, and really come into thier own round the first week in june.course makes you think wether to go for it or lay up in front of the river foss that crosses many of the holes.very friendly pro (mark)as are all of the staff.we were made very welcome when we were visitors.the club house is excellent and the food is superb and very reasonably priced, bacon sarnies especially.well worth a visit and this course will get better and better.
If I could be precise i would give challenge a 7.5. Any way, a very nice course, some par 4's long especially the 460 yd one with a beck going across the front of the green. Long course especially of the whites. There is a par 5 that's 602 yds. Nice tree lined fairways, very big greens which on a personal note I like. I think it is better than Fulford GC, but that's my opinion. Nice day out.
Very good course, long and challenging for a mid-high handicapper. Greens were big and true, Tee's in Ok nick, fairways good. Its tree lined so wayward drives were invariably punished. a few becks cross fairways usually causing a bit of head scratching for me (try to carry or lay up?)The 566yard (yellow) 18th could be a killer in to the wind, we were lucky, but still made a hash of it! Good club house, pro shop and staff. Excellent bacon rolls!
Good club for only 15 years old. However, when it expanded to 27 holes, it lost it's character it once had.A good test, but mostly because the design was restricted due to land space.Once the trees grow, it will be bordering on the ridiculous, ie, no rough off fairways, just trees. The greens I must say, are very good, always good to putt on.The owner has done a good job with what he had land wise, the club house is very welcoming, but this course may be best seen as a very good muni, as visitors seem to be a priority at times ( makes money) ..the 9 hole couse with a member is a pound a hole..need I say more ?
Played in April 2005, had to agree with everything already written, except green fees they are now £23, great opening hole and the experience just gets better.
I have been a member of the club for 5 years starting at a handicap of 24. I now play off 8. The reason is simple, although Forest Park golf club is a flat course, it is the second longest off the white tees,it challenges every aspect of the game and ability of every player, it is rapidly improving with its excellent condition of greens ( which are always true ). It is like everything, to get better you have to challenge yourself physically and mentally. On a calm day it is possible to shoot low but ironically the greens can be tricky when they are fast. On a windy day it can play like a links course which exercises your range and variation in shots. This club is progressing at a rapid rate of knots thanks to the superb maintenance plan, the funds available from the owner and just recently the permanent position of a professional which has brought this club into the big league. I predict that in 5 years time when the trees have made this an even tighter course than it is, it will be the best course in the area if it isn't already.
I played the old foss course on Wednesday 13 Oct 99, the fairways and greens are in good condition. This course provided a great challenge to players of all abilities and the other facilities are of a great standard. The price shown in this web page is incorect, the green fee's are now £17 per round.
