God made this course. He said it was good. Trent Jones was hired for bunkering only (did a good job). The first nine are a good preparation for the spectacular back nine. Howling wind forces to hit long irons to cliff top greens protected by ravines and gorse. You feel, well, awkward to see balls attracted by white beaches well below course level. Play the back tees and enjoy the beating. Splendid views will make up for the pain. Hole 16 will stay with you as Europe's answer to Pebble beach closing hole. Was never so happy with a bogey in my life... Just make sure you play here before dying.
I played the back nine in late September 2008. The course is in the most beautiful setting I have ever played, beating even the best of Ireland's links. The views over the straits to Sardinia and the Iles de Lavezza are stunning. The signature par 5 16th lived up to its billing as one of the best par 5s in the world. And, this is the only course I have ever played where I was able to nip into the sea for a quick dip on the delightful beach between the 13th green and the 14th tee. The staff in the pro shop were utterly charming and welcoming, the club house and restaurant are extremely luxurious and elegantly designed. It is billed as an exclusive venue for celebs, but we as ordinary mortals were made to feel very comfortable. The course itself was looking a little "tired" in places, but this is perhaps not surpriding for the end of the season.
