1 review of Great Torrington Golf Club

Set on a Devon hilltop, Great Torrington is a long established and traditional course where accuracy is paramount. On my visit in early April, it was indeed windy, which it seems is the norm and made one or two of the holes very awkward indeed. Straight away from the 1st/10th you realise that this is not your average parkland design, this being a short uphill par 4 with the green tucked away out of sight on the right, where the OOB posts get very close! The 4th is described as one of the toughest par 3's around and at 237 yards, I can certainly vouch for this, a good driver still being short on my visit. This is followed by a par 3 at the other end of the scale, just 120 yards long, but with just as much trouble being played steeply downhill to a narrow green with anything meaning a long walk. All in all, a genuine old fashioned course where the main hazards are the natural slopes and the gorse, although there are a number of well placed bunkers. A smallish but modern clubhouse has all the facilities needed incuding a bar and a nice separate dining area, and most importantly, a warm welcole. If you are in the area, don't be put off by the shortish overall length, for like me, a enjoyable round is assured however badly you play!
