This is a good links course from the 1st to the 9th and the 13th to the end but the bit in the middle is unliksy and boring. However the finish makes up for it. The staff and members are very friendly and the food is good.
Always in beautiful condition, with greens of stunning quality. The holes around the clubhouse are superb classic links affairs with blind shots aplenty. Over the road there is still the links turf but on a flatter layout. Some tough long holes especially 6 and 7 into the prevailing wind. Staff and members are always friendly and accommodating. I always enjoy my visits here, despite my scores.
Played this course twice in their Mixd Open. Course in excellent condition on both occasions with fast and true greens. The only drawback was that the white tee markers had been put on the yellow tees so you didn't get the benefit of playing the full course. For this reason we will not be playing in their open competitions again.
Played in May 2010 as a members guest, this was my first experience of Links Golf and an extremely enjoyable one. I a msure the track would of been more difficult/impossible without someone knowing where to play on upcoming hazards. Have to say i really enjoyed the course and the clubhouse, and would happliy play it again and well worth anyone who hasn't playe dit taking a trip out.
Played as part of a society day on 18/4/10 off the white tees. havent played this course before and found it a really challenging round considering i play off 24. Fortunately there was no wind at all which made things slightly easier but some of the tee shots still required a very good hit to clear any potential trouble spots. quite a narrow course so anyone inconsistant off the tee could struggle here especially on the links side of the course 1,2,and 14-18.) the par threes were interesting ( the two par threes on the club hole side (2 & 16 were wonderful short holes requiring a very accurate tee shot otherwise desperate trouble could await.)the two situated "over the road" 4 & 11 were easier from the tee but the greens were tougher to read !!!!) to sum up-(stapleford scoring made things better for the couple of 8s and the one 9 i carded !!!!!!!!) and my 11 year old son played off the red tees and he more than held his own against the grown ups scoring at least half our points!!! an excellent day and i hope to play there again later this year
Pretty spectacular entrance to the club, driving through huge sandhills to the imposing clubhouse. I found the layout odd, and ultimately disappointing. There are two halvess to this course, holes 1,2 and 14 to 18 are on the clubhouse side of the road and are all superb tough links holes (think Birkdale), but when you cross the road to go nearer the estuary you are in drained marshland rather than links. A couple of those holes, particularly 5, border on ugly with big sea defences, and all these holes are in poorer condition then the clubhouse side of the road. Greens and tees though are excellent.
Played October 2005 as a member's guest, lucky to find a break in the wet weather. Very nice traditional club and layout. Never played a low-ground links course of this type previously. Soil less sandy than our typical links. Much of the course is below the level of protective flood banks against the sea and thus flatish. Very interesting starting and finishing holes though - amongst old sandhills, tight for driving and approach shots. Top class greenkeeping as one would expect from a club of such status. Clubhouse is first class. Just across the road is a similar but lesser municipal course which has some repetitive holes though.
I have played this course in all four seasons and can recommend it as a must to visit for anyone in the area of Southport. There is an excellent variety of holes with the last five likely to spoil a good round. Greens are always in good condition and the course well maintained. Excellent club house with first class dining room, food, service and hospitality.
Played during the festival week Aug 2003. A very enjoyable course in good condition. Excellent clubhouse and friendly people. Would definitely recommend!
Played Hesketh the week of the Open in 1998. Interesting course with a good mix of holes that require you attention to score well. Greens were very fast! Must be a well respected course to be used as a qualifying site for the Open. I had the privliage of having the pro's daughter caddie for me and our group found her presence a welcome addition. We also had a surprise visit from Davis Love III prior to our dinner which was a highlite of our trip to the Open. I would not hesitate to return and play the course again!
