This is a quality course, even if a bit pricey at £65. The course layout is unique, with some large grass bunkers throughout. The large greens are in good condition and were quick and true. I suggest accuracy is more important than length here. Highlight of the round was probably the 17th.. a great little short par 4 with a raised green peppered by (sand) bunkers. Would definitely visit again although probably at the twilight rate.
Decent course, but nothing extra special. Not great value for £50 paid. Played in July, greens and fairways well maintained.A bit snobby, though the catering staff were very friendly. Not enough bunkers, thought the first 4 holes have undualting greens and fairways which can be tricky.Onlt 2 par 5s, and one of those is only 468 yards. it's 6300 off the whites, so not very long.
Played this a couple of days ago as part of a small society. Weather was not as predicted and many fairways and greens were frozen!(KZG) Good clubhouse facilities and friendly staff but slightly stuffy feel. Pro shop smallish but enough - does fittings into KZG gear and huge drawer of complimentary tees. Starts with a Par 3 which isn't my favourite style. Magnificent Oxfordshire view on second before heading back to 'common' style. Some treacherous slopes on greens and several have big hollows in front of them. Several fairways have huge grass bunkers that look like old bomb craters. Pays to be straight as fairways aren't wide and OB features on more holes than normal, though rough isn't too penal. Would love to return in summer to experience greens at their best. Holes don't have markers and direction from green not always marked, so navigation will be better next time too.
Played here on Wednesday 14th December ( £20 on the twilight rate after 1 p.m ) My overall impression was that it wasn't quite as good as i was expecting . Friendly & welcoming club with kind of an olde worldy charm .Cosy clubhouse .Similar to a common land course .Treelined & in pleasant surroundings. Generally flat .Very well maintained course (there's obviously a lot of money here ). Superb putting surfaces & the fastest greens i've putted on this winter (maybe all year) .Long range putts are a real test of your putting touch & if you're a fraction out you're 8ft short/long. Fast play seems to be the order of the day here & due to the compactness of the course 2 of us shot round in 2 hours & 40 minutes .Before we knew it we'd finished & it felt as if we'd played 15/16 holes . Although aesthetically pleasing , a fair few holes are quite tight & unless you're Monty you're hitting a 3 wood too often for my liking as the driver is too risky . Despite plenty of positives here , i found it a bit mundane & lacking in a bit of excitement. Worth playing once but one i wouldn't be that fussed about returning to . Kevin B.
played the course in mid october and boy did the weather let us down, i was like a drowned rat after the 8 th but to much relief the rain stopped the sun come out and i could see this course for all its ye olde english charm that is missing in so many course in the area, i will def be going back if only to try and get the better of the greens, which even in the heavy rain stood up to it better than me. this is a classic english course that is crying out to be played. go and enjoy yourself.
Just played as a society day out. I organised the day and can only thank the club for their hospitality. The course is one of, if not the best in the area, tradtional heathland course over 100 years old. Each hole is tree lined and I would say that no 2 holes are the same and I cannot pick out a hole that is the best of the lot, or indeed the worst. Fantastic course excellent greens and well worth going for a day. If you want to play a real golf course not an american style one - visit here.
We played here as a society in April. The greens had recently been slit tined, but were still quite quick and very true. Some intriguing holes, with banks running diagonally across the fairways, misleading doglegs, (a personal view!) and testing par threes. A Great venue, with a warm welcome in the clubhouse, and excellent catering - Thank you Huntercombe!!.
Olde worlde clubhouse and course. Private members only although I managed to play on a society day. Some unbelievably tiered greens made me putt to a hole 8 feet away and at eye level...... Main hazards tend to be the tight fairways and craters which make you play for position rather than just blast it down the middle. Greens were very fast and in excellent condition.
This very mature course provides many extremely attractive and testing holes. Generally a very laid-back atmosphere to the club. Only 2&3 balls or foursomes allowed, so usually a 3 hour round at most, DG 06.05.01 (Handicap 7).
Enjoyable and reasonably challenging course in pleasant surroundings. Not too busy, even on the Sunday I played. (No fourballs allowed). Take some extra balls!
