The only course in Leicestershire in the top 100. I thought this was a truly excellent golf course and the scenery magnificent, at times I thought I was in Surrey rather than a few miles from Oakham. Layed out rather than built on heathland, each hole appears secluded from the next by the beautiful trees lining each side. The trees dont really come into play but the rough certainly does! This is an old fashioned course where the difficulty does not come from the length of the holes, most are short by todays big driving standards. But miss the fairway and you will be punished, Im not saying how many balls I lost but it was a few and by the ninth I had learnt to think my way round rather than use the driver. Of note is the placement of the bunkers, these were designed to be an essential part of the course, again they added to the difficulty and there are lots of them! The clubhouse was comfortable though could be better, and the welcome warm, but a limited menu so sandwiches seem to be mainly chosen. Overall this is an old fashioned course. It thoroughly deserves to be in the top 100, and though not long, its better for it, as it requires skill rather than brawn to make a good score. I look forward to returning and would happily play this course every week.
luffenham heath is close to being a top course, but to me it just lacks that wow factor.the course itself designed by harry colt (and you can see a lot of his influance) is predominantly tree lined, but on many holes, are so far apart they dont give the holes any real definition and dont really come into play.it starts off quite short but interesting and into the back nine becomes a little bland until you get to the last two holes especially the seventeenth.the seventh deserves a mention as well. the course does have some top class elements, in that the fairways and greens are excellant, feeling like top quality carpets.difficult it isnt, unless the wind blows a gale or you are not on your game.if you play on their special rate offers then it is well worth one visit because it is a nice course, but whether it deserres to be rated so high in the top 100 courses i am not sure, but that is open for opinion.
Great course, interesting and attractive layout. Plenty of width before you get in deep trouble, even after lots of rain still playable and at £35 for a winter round well worth a visit
Played the course with members on Captain's Charity Day May 2004. Excellent welcome, spacious and well equipped changing room. We were welcomed by the starter who ensured that we were aware of the specific competition rules and local rules currently in operation. The course itself was in excellent condition with well grassed fairways and fairly fast greens. The rough was quite punitive in places and bordered on the unfair. Although some holes needed little thought from the tee others proved difficult due to their length and overall I felt it was a good test of golf skills. Well worth a visit.
