Real test, one of the most difficult courses I have ever played although saying that it had been set up for the northern counties champs and boy was it tight.probably just as difficult in its usual state with some very long carries for the average golfer but none the less asuper course with lovely greens which are fim, true and fast.very good facilities with very good, friendly staff.would definitelygo back.

Play this course approx once per month. Generally in good condition. Some good holes and the staff do well to keep the course in condition, because it is huge and could easily accomodate 27 holes if designed today. Staff and members are helpful and welcoming. This is potentially one of the best tracks in the North West. On its day, I'm sure it is!

This is a big course so don't attempt if you're not up to long walks. That said it is a good layout that doesn't just rely on length. Was in good condition, especially the greens. Played in april and recieved a discounted rate for the round. Found the members friendly and the staff more than helpful. I'd recommend this as a days golfing with no hesitation.

Played this course as a birthday treat last weekend, with a close friend of mine. The club is traditional in its values and you could see this throughout the clubhouse. we arrived bright and early, one of the first to tee off that morning just before a large group of members of which some were part of the commitee. The pro shop was excellent and the pro's assistants were cheerful and informative. we couldnt wait to tee off. However, our trouble began on the first tee, with one of the comitee members telling me to tuck my shirt in. the soon after on the 4th tee a different comitee member shouts at me from 50 yards to tuck my shirt in, as its a course rule. 2 minutes later shouts at me again after my tee shot to "tuck your shirt in, ive already told you before" this starts a distance argument for a few minutes. so far we've played 3 holes and been shouted at 3 times something that over 15years of playing golf i have never ever heard of before. we let the group behind play thru, as we hadnt played the course before and were a little slow playing. The guy who had shouted at me, was shocked to find out we werent junior members and from that moment turned on the charm. Although no apology was forthcoming. its funny how people look down at junior members as people they can bully and belittle. but again the calm was short lived as 1 hole later the a member from the group behind shouted "oi you two! what do you think your playing at!" it turned out that we shudnt have let that group thru and were slowing down play (the group infront infact had only teed off 5mins before. and accused us of playing two balls each hole....i had just hit my ball out of bounds left and was lost so i hit another from the tee.) another example of rudeness from a comitee member. Fuming we headed off down the fairway. waited at the next tee for the group infront to play, and again shouted at from the group behind for taking too long "thiis is ridiculous lads" said one of the members. we finished the round. and imediately head for the pro shop to complain, the assistant was more than apologetic and said that it wasnt the only instant of problems with tradition regarding clothing and trying to change the course to go with the times. we cudnt fault the course really, the greens we in good condition, a little bumpy still after vertidraining weeks before. fairways clearly defined, tees a little over grown and bumpy under foot as the normal tees were under repair. the clubhouse was lovely and traditional and the facilities were fantastic with a chip area, practice net, putting green and driving range. however the comitee members were extremely arrogant and rude and spoilt what was a beautiful day. i wudnt join this club to become a member, which is a shame for a lovely course.

Unbelievable value at £20 on teeofftimes website for a Sunday afternoon. Fantastic course in great condition, was a little damp in places but tees and fairways were first class. Greens were receptive, but fast and true with many undulations. Welcome in the pro shop warm and friendly. Great course, well worth a visit.

Visited Manchester with our small Golf Society on 11th July 2008. This is a superb all round venue for a days golf. The welcome, hospitality and catering were second to none and there were no problems in tailoring a Society package to suit us which was not one of the Clubs "Standard" ones. The course is fantastic with a great variety of holes which roller coaster around the vast area that it covers. There are some great driving holes and a great set of par 3's. This is Britain (and of course Manchester) and the weather when we played was pretty dreadful and it rained most of the day but if anything it demonstrated just how good the course is. Even with some slight surface water on some, the greens still played well. In dry conditions they must be like putting on glass. Off the course the Clubhouse is excellent and every golfers whim is catered for without fuss. All in all, a most enjoyable day, despite the weather and we hope to return on a dry day in the future.

Despite living nearby I hadn't played this course until recently. The day I did play was wet and windy but the guy in the pro' shop - Stan - made me feel really welcome and went out of his way to give some useful tips. The course is presently undergoing a programme of bunker improvements and many of them are currently GUR. A lot of the greens are roped off as well and because of the weather the greens were a mixture of temporary and proper. Preferred lies were in play and you needed them as balls were plugging on the fairways. Although the course is not long it's in an enormous area which I reckon must be pushing nearly 300 acres. This means that apart from one or two holes, 5th and 6th, 9th and 10th, which have parallel fairways, you really feel as though you're on your own with nature. It's quite a hilly course and you need a degree of fitness and stamina to get the best out of your game. But you can always take a rest on some of the more elevated parts of the course and admire the panoramic views of Rochdale and Oldham!!! Lots of tee shots and approaches are blind and the par 5s were reachable for me only due to the fact that they were on temporary greens. The rough is very penal with many carries over ravines, valleys and streams and if you don't make the carry you can say goodbye to your ball. The par 3 4th is the first one to test your nerve and the 8th is another par 3 which gives you nothing for being long or left. The weather turned really bad as we played the 9th and 10th and we considered packing in but fortunately it relented somewhat and we played all 18 experiencing every sort of weather with the exception of fog. The 16th is a real brute and although I took driver off the tee I still came up 30 yds short with my second attempt as I put my first effort into the ravine never to be seen again - you'd be as well to have a supply of 'old' balls when you get to this hole. Finished the round in quite glorious sunshine and all in all had a thoroughly enjoyable game on what is a real challenging track made more difficult by the weather. It's well worth a visit and one I'll be playing again when the better weather comes. My only minor criticism is that the course would benefit from some signage to indicate the way to the next tee. It's such a vast area, and, not having played it before it was difficult to plot your way around but if you look for the cart path off the greens you won't get lost. Thank you Manchester for a great day's golf at only £15 which is excellent value for money.

I still refer to Manchester Golf Club as Hopwood each time I revisit this wonderful Club. The professional and all his staff are guaranteed to make you feel at home with the warmest of welcome. A well stocked pro shop together with good, honest advice ensure that it is always busy. The clubhouse is a magnificent looking place, with freindly staff always providing top quality catering. The view over the putting green is a sun trap at the height of summer. The course itself is a real challenge, an absolute brute if you're not on your game or the weather conditions are not the best. The par four 1st is a fairly simple and gentle opening hole, hardly preparing you for some of the difficulties ahead. That said, hit straight and you will score reasonably well. The par 3s are terrific, with the exception of the 8th which is a little weak. The 4th is a lovely hole to the eye, played from an elevated tee. The 13th presents a shot across the gully with nothing for short, and depending on pin position hitting the green doesn't guarantee a par! And then there is the long 16th, 220+ yards over a ravine which can be intimidating and can be a brute with the wind against. Add to that some terrific holes, including the tight par 4 5th, followed by the par 4 stroke index 1 6th, and you quickly realise you're not playing some mickey mouse track with holes which merge into one continuous blur of boredom. Doglegs on 10, 11 and 14 also provide a real stiff challenge. The greens are usually in good nick, though a couple of seasons ago they had some problems with the odd hole suffering from Fusarium, the first in particular from memory. But it's now back on track, and with the superbly maintained fairways, tee beds, bunkers etc you're sure to have an enjoyable trip. A real must for anyone who has yet to sample its delights.
