Played the course yesterday it's in great shape greens running fast and true , it was £80 for a round which was a great price we thought for a 4ball will defiantly go back for a game ,the guys in the pro shop were friendly and helpful as we're the bar staff if your in the area go along enjoyable course with wide fairways and some interesting holes !!!!!
I played the original 18 holes on Sat 11th July as part of a fourball and have to say I was left feeling slightly disappointed in the course. It is a fantastic setting with excellent facilities, but lacks the atmosphere of other clubs of the same reputation (Ramside, Slaley Hall, Wynyard Hall etc). £15 for an open competition was good value which I didnt mind paying, but I wouldnt have paid much more than that. Matfen has a fantastic reputation in the north east but for the time being I feel it is slightly overrated. The front nine was very up and down and far too many dog leg lefts, perhaps a few more trees would have made the course better. Back nine is much better, particularly the par 3 10th which is a stunning hole, and the stroke index one par 4 is a very tricky hole. No chance of holding anything on the greens which is a shame as they are good to look at but impossible to play. Fairways were 10 out of 10 and it is generally a well manicured course. Would like to return in a few years time to see how it matures but for now it isnt one of my top courses and can think of many better value for money courses to play in the area.
Played this course on monday 25th may 2009 and the greens were not as good as the courses in that areas such as Hexham or Prudhoe, but the fairways were very good. Wide open off the tee and i like all the par 3. Clubhouse facilities very good, but i would not come back here, since there are better courses in the area
We played this course back end of April 2009 and the course was excellent, well manicured fairways and teeboxes and the greens are a pleasure to putt on. We had a light bite in the clubhouse before going out and the food and price are both excellent. We stayed overnight and the evening meal was excellent. The staff were polite and courteous, we were treated like royalty 10/10. Can't wait to go again.
Played 13/03/2009 and the course for this time of year was superb. All of the greens were open and all but one were in excellent condition. Played from the winter tee boxes which kept the distance down a little. Fairways were the best part of the course, very well maintained. Even to food was nice in the clubhouse. Worth a visit!
The course is Very open & well suited to the more wayward player, the condition is good & the facilities are very good, with nice surroundings. The par 5's are a bit easy and the par 3's interesting. Not long and worth a visit.
played matfen 15th March 2007. The pro was very informative and helpful, and the course played well (even though we played off temp tee's). the course's main greens were in play and were in really good condition for the time of year. the course wasn't as wet as i thought it would have been and my only real gripe would be that we got caught behind a 3-ball of ladies members which took 15 minutes per hole. we used the 2 fore 1 voucher scheme and all in all had a good day's golf for not a lot of money. the course also has a nine hole course opening in june 2007 and i would like to return to play that also. well worth a visit if your in the area.
Played the course in the last couple of days.Fairways fiarly wide, but the rough was deep! The greens were fast and true. The par 3 10th next to the clubhouse is picturesque, and the finishing hole is great. Beware the river that runs through a few of the closing holes, and the wall that seems to run through a fair number of the holes. This course is a pleasure to play, and I would go there again.
I last played this course in August 2003. First thing I must say is that the course is a good and fair test of your golf - regardless of ability. Outstanding views of the local area. The clubhouse is modern and offers good quality food. The negative side of this course is that with just 8 minutes between tee times, on a busy day (and it's usually busy) then delays quickly build up. By the time we'd reached the par 3 4th Tee, we had to wait in line with the three groups in front of us whilst waiting for the green to clear. No course marshalls were in evidence and our group left the course after the 6th green - some 2 hours and 10 minutes after we'd started - that equates to a round lasting 6 hours 30 minutes. The pro shop staff did (eventually) refund the equivelant of 12 holes to us, but it was done in a way that made the experience even worse. A great shame about the way the course is managed (or not as the case may be) because it provides an interesting game in an area of outstanding beauty.
Played this course in early August 2003, the fairways and greens were in excellent condition and its part of the 2 for 1 offer so it's well worth a visit...very entertaining, and some great views, just watch out for the 'ha-ha' walls, especially on the dog-leg 2nd, where you play slightly downhill to a elevated green!!!
