Over a long weekend I played Montecastillo four times and as a +14 handicapper targeted myself with achieving gross pars or birdies across all holes off of the championship tees. Almost achieved a part from one hole, the par 4 6th SI-13 hole! In total I averaged at least a birdie a round and 6 gross pars. My greatest Montecastillo achievement was a birdie on the uphill 424 metre par 4 SI-1 15th with a holed third wedge shot. Played in mid September and was never held up by slow play and often, even as late as 09:30, was the first person on the course. As Montecastillo resort is right next to the Jerez motor racing circuit then youll end up on the course with the Formula One boys from Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault as they all use the test track during the season. My own personal views puts the par 4 18th with its raised cliff tee and large lake as the stand out signature hole, but the long par-3 2nd, well bunkered par-4 5th, downhill par 4 7th with lake, raised tee then uphill par 5 9th, long uphill par 3 11th, eagleable par 5 12th, SI-2 par 4 13th and the before mentioned SI-1 uphill par 4 15th all stick in the memory. The restaurant food is little on the expensive side although the clubhouse refreshments are reasonable. However, close by and in Jerez youll find some gems of restaurants and tapas bars. Ryanair fly to Jerez direct but Gibraltar is better served and only an hour away.
This course is spectacular - plenty of elevated tees with stunning views, perfect to watch your ball sailing into one of the many lakes that hug the fairways! This Jack Nicklaus designed course hosted the Volvo Masters for several years, and there is no doubt that it tests every aspect of your game. Careful placement of your tee shot is essential, and once you've curbed the desire to play each hole like the pros you can put a good round together. Very impressive clubhouse and when we played (Monday afternoon) we were the only people on the course. One final tip: get a buggy. The holes are very spaced out, on a couple of holes the walk is a good 5 mins from green to tee, and besides, the buggies have GPS with an interactive course guide which gives you all the distances you need.
