Well designed course with some fairly scenic holes. However some of the fairways on the back 9 were very disappointing. In fact on one par 4 my group remarked that you honestly could not make out the difference between the 'fairway' and long patchy rough. They just hadn't been cut for a while -it was a Sunday in May, the recent weather conditions had been good! It didn't spoil our round and granted we only paid £20 but the finish on some holes (bunkers included) was as bad as I've ever seen.

Booked a 802 tee time. Arrived at 745 to find reception closed. I waited n waited untill 805 when a member who I spoke to said to tee of and pay when I finish.. So we popped round to the first hole. About to tee off we get a shout that we haven't paid. So we went and sorted out payment and teed off.. We had a little rain over night nothing major so wasn't expecting to much. On landinging my 2nd shot on the green I was more than happy with an expected birdy only to find it took me 3 to putt. Due to poor greens water logged to the point of puddles. Very poor dranage.. I thought must be a one off well I was WRONG every green was the same and most covered in mud you had to clear the mud b4 attempting your put.. As for the fairways most were ok but some were very muddy Infact I discribed one like a used rugby pitch I won't be returning untill the summer if they are lucky to see me again.

4 of us played here 3 weeks ago and what a great course.Everything from the greens.tees.fairways and bunkers is A1.The thing that stood out the most was the greens, they definately were not boring and alot of them are either 2 or 3 tier.I would also like to add the woman on the phone was most helpful.

This course was a great course. Great greens and tee mats and better than any other course nearby. Although the work has ruined the course slightly it is near completetion and the course will be fantastic. This course is a hidden gem and especially for the price this is a great course. Defenitaly one to try.

I play this course quite regular and due to my employer I pay a reduced fee of £13. It seems now that most of the work being carried out is near completion which is good, however it never really hindered your round that much to totally spoil it. I enjoy playing North Weald and as mentioned before there is a good mixture of holes, some requiring you to be fairly straight and accurate off the tee. There is only one thing in my opinion that lets this place down and sadly it has nothing to do with the people that work at the club. I played this course a couple of months back on a day when the HSBC were having a golf day. The greens were in absolute mint condition and very true, however on returning a few weeks later I find myself repairing around 3 - 4 pitchmarks per green. Wether it is visitors or members is not really an issue, the fact that people do not bother to repair pitchmarks is a total lack of respect for other golfers and the hard work put in by the green staff. So to all golfers, when you leave home for a round of golf, be it North Weald or any club for that matter, please make sure you take your ettiquette with you!! Give this course a few years and it will be up there with the best Essex has to offer.

This place is a real secret gem!!! Played the course a few weeks back and cannot speak any higher of my experience. The course is fantastic, with holes to challenge all levels of skill. Being a mid handicapper, I thoroughly enjoyed my round and, as I live fairly local, I am going to be taking out membership there at the end of the year, without doubt. Greens are fantastic with great shape and definition, fairways are lush and well kept and a number of memorable holes across the entire 18, make this a must play course. Off the course, the girls on reception cannot help you enough, and the big lad behind the bar pours the best pint of Guinness this side of Dublin. Food is good and well priced too. And my round was for the princly sum of £13! Absolute bargain!! Get yourself down to this course now, before the world and its wife discovers it!!!

Nice course but lots of work going on. The staff are friendly (except for the manager). 4th hole is well thought out. Well worth playing if it wasn't for the manager who is very arrogant and unhelpful.

I quite enjoyed the course. Tha landscaping work is a bit of an eyesore over the first 4 holes especially, as well as some noise pollution from an airfield and the motorway. There are plenty of good golf holes on the course and the condition of the course (apart from the earthy mounds) is good. There are some small spots on the course where bad drainage has caused damage and creates unplayable areas, but overall I thought things were kept to a very acceptable standard. The clubhouse itself is nice, especially the bar/restaurant. The staff were also friendly and helpful. £33 pounds is perhaps on the pricy side, and I would be tempted to look for a better deal.

I must say that it grieves me to read some of the comments below. It is true that there is a considerable amount of re-landscaping going on but I fail to see why so much animosity is being aimed at the owners who are obviously investing significantly trying to improve the course for its members/guests. I must point out that I have no affiliation to the club and I do not know any of the staff, I just think some of the comments are overly harsh. I have played the course a few times and always found the tee boxes, fairways and greens in excellent condition. There are some great holes as well, the 4th, 8th and 10th being especially nice. Couple this with reasonable pricing, great practice facilities and friendly members and I cant really see any negatives. If I was able to join a club, North Weald would be at the top of the list. Happy golfing everyone!

My sixteen year old son and I play this course every week. Yes at the moment there is lots of work being carried out and up until very recently there was heavy plant moving earth, but that seems to have died down a bit and now is not so noisey. However, I think this is a great course to play and should not be avoided. The greens are good the fairways are well maintained and there are some very interesting holes to play. at the moment this si a course that is very kind. If you go too far left or right you will be in GUr and get a free drop. This won't last long so have fun.

As the owner of North Weald Golf Club, I would just like to confirm that as highlighted by Mr. Bennett and Mr. Byrne below, we are undergoing re-modelling works on the golf course to create greater interest between holes, but all tees, fairways and greens are in play and in excellent condition. Currently 7 of the holes have areas of Ground under Repair adjacent to the fairway allowing a free drop back towards the fairways. The course works will be completed by the end of 2008. While writing I should point out that Mr. Byrne was expelled from the club for continuous verbal abuse towards members of staff. I would suggest this might be the reason for his comments on this web site.

having played this couse on the 23/05/08 i was not impressed at all the greens were awfull along with the constant noise from industrial machines made this round 1 to forget... save your green fee and go elsewhere.. blakes is 10 minutes up the road and believe me at £17 a round you will not be dissapointed ...

Wow, what a course...in about five years time when they've finished building it. For now, treat this as a practice round and a walk round a land-tipping building site but not much else. I can see what it is trying to do and once finished looks like it will be great but the constant stream of dump trucks, mounds of earth, combined with a very heavy and saturated course (despite not much rain of late) made this an exercise in playing golf in a building site. I admit to being a beginner, which make things harder but there are better courses nearby.

I played North Weald today for the first time and reading some of the reports below was not to sure what to expect. I was glad to find a lovely little course with some great holes with plenty of challenges. Admittedly there is a lot of construction work going on, however once completed I think the course will be a cracker. The tees and fairways were all in excellent condition and the greens were pretty good considering the time of the year. Everyone we met was friendly and polite and I will definately be returning soon.

If you enjoy playing on a building site this is the course for you. The owner is tipping on every avaiable piece of land so be prepared to dodge lorries! The food and service in the clubhouse is also appalling. What used to be a fairly decent course and clubhouse has deteriorated over the past year.

We were not expecting much from this course but were surprised. A very wet January but the course was in great condition. The greens were superb, dry, with many contours, in the summer this will be great. The tees were also in great nick, no need for mats. The fairways in places were very wet but it seems they are doing lots of work for drainage over here. The course is fairly plain but they are doing lots of work, putting in lots of water and new features. I look forward to playing this in the summers, I recommend you try this course. I will defo bring our society here.

Having played North Weald regularly over the past two years, I have been hugely impressed by the improvements in it's condition. Clearly there has been a great deal of work and financial investment to achieve the results I have seen this season. The greens and tees are in excellent condition and there are some really challenging putts on many undulating greens, lots of bunkers and a fair amount of water. Despite the very dry weather (now mid July 2006), the fairways are also in good condition. the practice area is being re-developed for next season, but the chipping area and putting green are open. Great clubhouse and welcoming staff.

I found the course in excellent condition and each hole represented quite a challenge! As a low handicapper I found this one of the more enjoyable courses in the area. The greens are in superb condition and the fairways were surprisingly lush and well defined for early April. The staff are friendly and the service in the clubhouse is excellent, I will definitely be returning.

Played here on a December weekday .(on a deal for £15 including a meal ). One of the most uninspiring courses that i've played .It's fairly bland & in bleak surroundings with few memorable holes. It's difficult to find positives about the place . The better holes lie the clubhouse side of the A road that runs through the course. You can see & hear this busy road for most of the round . The remaining 10 holes across the road are open, exposed & unimaginatively designed.Further tricks missed are that the ponds here could have been better utilised to be integral parts of the holes. The course was wet in places & the general condition was reasonable .However ,the greens putted fairly well. During our round we had to miss out 2 holes to get past an ignorant 4 ball who were holding up the 2 ball in front of us with a virtually empty course ahead. Decent value with the offer but i wouldn't return. Kevin B.

Played the course on 18th July 2005. Found the greens and tees in excellent condition. Fairways were hard but given the lack of rain over the last few weeks this was not surprising. Friendly staff, nice clubhouse, very good practice facilities all added up to a really enjoyable day. Will definately be returning.

The Green's are in excellent condition, a joy to putt on. The fairways were a bit on the hard side and needed luck some times with the bounce (could go left, right or straight on. Excellent club house and practise area. Would recommend to everybody to play.

I like this course, mostly for the fact that not one hole feels like another. They are all quite individual and the Greens are normally in excellent condition!

Played this course in the middle of the August heatwave at 4.30pm start and 29C! The course is very good and the greens among the best I have played on - remarkable given the weather this year. The 16th is a particularly attractive par 4. I wouldn't really describe this course as parkland as it is quite open with lots of well placed bunkers. (or badly placed from my point of view!). It had a pseudo links feel to it but this may have been an illusion (mirage?!) due to the weather conditions. The fairways weren't brilliant and rock hard but completely acceptable especially as it's only rained a few times since January in these arid parts of Essex! The rough had thankfully been cut back but was still punishing enough. It was very friendly and welcoming but I found the insistence on white socks with shorts to be somewhat pedantic. All in all good value at £17.50. (Twilight?) Played to handicap. (22) Dave
