3 reviews of Oakdale Golf Club

We played Oakdale in their open day thursday 16th June and were expecting a gentle knock around a pleasant course but underestimated the test that the course presented. It was a really good mix of tough par 3's into the stiff breeze and varied par 4's and 5's. The par 3 ninth being a signiature hole and very pleasing on the eye. Friendly members and staff meant we had an enjoyable day and look forward to going back soon.

Played mid September as part of a charity day. Shotgun start meant that I didn't play the course in the planned order. Oakdale is hidden in what feels like the centre of Harrogate. Large club house overlooking the opening and closing holes in a very spectacular fashion. Has a reputation for being wet due to the presence of the river running past several holes. However the greens staff had done their best and this did not detract, although there was little or no roll. Course is pleasant but lacking real signature holes. The highlights are really only when the river comes into play. Elsewhere large fairways provide ample space. Some of the bunkering was very fussy being cuts into shamrock style shapes - why? One or two greens were a bit scabby but all were quick and difficult to read. Would like to play this on a hot summers day with hard fairways. Club house as previously reported was more formal than most but not opressive. A practise area - bring your own balls. No range Would probably play other courses first but Oakdale provides a reasonable challenge on a day out.

Played the course with a member recently and felt the value for money was exceptional. I agree at £38 is steep but playing with a member costs £15 only. I thought the course provided a thorough test and offered enough opportunities to keep everyone interested. A couple of tough par 3's,4's & 5's and a testing closing hole lead me to advise players of 20 handicaps and below to give the course the once over. I reiterate playing with a member offers the greatest value for money. Superb Club House also.
