5 reviews of Pontefract and District Golf Club
After organising the Northern Ladies Foursomes event over three days at this Club in April 2010, I can only say good things about the Club. The weather leading up to the competition was not good but the Greens staff pulled out al the stops and presented a Course in excellent condition. In fact, the greens were so true and fast that I thought it was like playing in the middle of the season. There was not one complaint regarding the Course throughout the three days of competition. Not only was the Course good, the reception that we recieved from the staff in the Clubhouse was second to none. We were all made very welcome, the food was excellent and the one or two niceties was the icing on the cake.
What an excellent day we had at your Club when the Yorkshire County team took on their counterparts from nottingham. You pulled out all stops to make the day memorable for Pontefract GC, and that is how it turned out to be. The course was well presented and everyone agreed it provided a good challenge for both teams; the hospitality you provided was second to none, and the meal was the best we have enjoyed in a long time. In all, one of the best days for Yorkshire County golf, and our sincere thanks for all your efforts.
I read the previous review, but was committed to go anyway, as part of a Society day (28.3.08). What a nightmare! A thoroughly miserable 27-hole day. The organiser had rung the day before, to be warned that a trolley ban was likely, but nothing else. In reality, we were playing off temporary tees and so-called temporary greens throughout. I say "so-called", because they were simply holes cut in fairway, with not even a token attempt to prepare them as greens. The temporary tees were, in many cases, simply mudbaths. While I appreciate that weather conditions makes management problematic, some warning as to the conditions, and/or a partial refund would have made matters a bit better. There was an apology from the Club Captain, but that doesn't add up to much when we could have been warned in advance. The ONLY positive part of the experience was the lunch, which was simple but absolutely fine. Certainy, we will never return there, and given that this is obviously not an isolated experience, I'd recommend anyone else to avoid it entirely.
We had the whole of Yorkshire to select from on a bright and clear midweek February morning. The aim was to play for a full day with a spot of lunch in the clubhouse thrown in. I rang Pontefract - a course we knew little about. The website looked good though. No problem getting on we were told on the phone and the course is playing its full length, the only temporary maybe the 3rd. With optimism we drove the 20 miles or so from Leeds getting lost in the process as I had forgotten to pick up the directions. The 1st didn't disappoint, with a challenging 2nd shot skirting trees. The 2nd hole had an interesting drive but the "green" was just a normal size hole in the middle of the fairway. Instead of putting we picked up giving ourselves 2 putts. The 3rd was even worse - the "green" was just a muddy mess under some trees. You couldn't putt. Gutted! If the 4th had been on a temporary we would have packed in there and then. We presses on though but the enjoyment had evaporated. In all more than half the holes were on temps. Now I have no problem with green preservation in the middle of winter, it is sometimes good management. What I do object to is being charged a full £20 and arrive under false pretences. We would have gone somewhere else if told the truth and returned to Pontefract at another time. The course itself when played on the proper greens would be a pretty decent one - well looked after and some interesting drives. I shelled out over £40 in all - I won't be going back.
congratulations to all involved in the organisation of the rabbit comps.held a week last friday and the comp. held on saturday. The course was a pleasure to play, well maintained,a credit to all the greens staff;the comps.,both well organised, with ball spotters on crucial holes, providing assistance for those wayward shots. Thanks to all I enjoyed myself even if I did'nt play too well
