10 reviews of Southfield Golf Club
Some reviewers have said this course is not for the low handicapper, well it really is, because it asks for some highly skilled shots into the greens if you want a birdie, but because the course is so well designed and doesn't beat the higher handicapper up they think it is not challenging, length isn't everything. This is the perfect golf course, it's not Sunningdale or Royal St Georges but it is brilliantly designed, apart from the new 18th, poor H.S. Colt, I bet he's turning in his grave, one of his partners, Tom Simpson was right "The ignorance of committees is invincible" and so it was proved, total blot on the landscape. But still a great days golf.
I am not a member here by the way, I have played here about 6-8 times and enjoy it more every time. Always the best of condition and great food. This is a Colt course, and as such you get the best possible design, along with MacKenzie they always designed there courses for maximum fun and golf enjoyment, and that is exactly what you get. Great match play course with 5 fantastic par 3's and a host of great mid iron par 4's. How anyone can say it's up and down is beyond me. It is two loops of 9 back to the clubhouse and each hole being totally different to the last. What more do you want?
I played here in June 2012, and found the course in fantastic condition. The greens were brilliant, and all the staff and members were friendly and helpful. We aren't an amazingly talented group of golfers, but found the course a decent test. Had a great day, but I could imagine that the lower handicap golfer might look for a slightly stiffer challenge. However, that is not to take anything away from a gem of a course, handily located, and excellently maintained.
I've been a member at what is now 'Oxford Golf Club' for 8 years and never tire of playing here. Sandy soil and a hilltop setting keep the course in great condition year-round. Greens are consistently good and rarely flat. Three new ponds surrounding the short par 5 finishIng hole, plus new bunkering elsewhere have stiffened up what was already a good test, designed by the great Harry Colt. Watch out for the par 3 12th - one of the best short holes around. Not a 'big name' course, but a good one and most who play it come back.
I would have to disagree with most of the reviews already posted about Southfield, most of which appear to have been written by members! The course is a short, largely unchallenging course, with few stand out holes. It's main advantage is it's location - very close to the centre of Oxford, explaining it's close relationship with the University. Few university golfers, however, wish to return after their studies. This is not to say that Southfield is a poor course, simply an unspectacular and average one.
Played here June 08. Pleasant, established parkland course .Not in the top bracket but worth playing ,although i probably wouldn't be that fussed about playing it again. Good mix & variety of holes ,although it can be a little bit up & down in places .Decent par 3's .Tree lined but not really heavily . Course conditining was excellent & the greens were the best i've putted on for a long time. The course maintenance here elevates the course . Holes near the clubhouse are generally easy walking ,although there's a brook/ravine which runs across the far end of the course where it gets a bit hilly . Overall, i'd give this 7 out of 10. Being a member of southfield golf club this is the best course around in oxfordshire by a long shot. i really enjoy the challenge of the course and the state the course is in it is spectacular. I would advise anybody to join southfield golf clubbecause of its friendly atmosphere and the challenge you recieve!!
I love this course its great. the greens are as lush and true as u could ask and the variation in holes is very well laid out. their amen corner of 11,12,13 is a magic combination that will test u and reward u if u play it right. (if anybody goes level par 1st time over those 3 holes get in touch i'll buy u a pint) if your in oxford or looking for a course to play make this your 1st stop as its a step above those in the area. only studley wood matches it but they are very different course so maybe make a point of playing both. i'm not a member here so its a fair review. go found out why i love it so.
This beatiful gives you a great majoritory of holes e.g. Narrow par 4's that are tree lined up to a green that is surrounded by deep bunkers, Also a deadly par 3 that slopes way to nothing. this golf club has a lively atmosphere and you will fell very welcome. PLUS the food is different class my compliments to the chef.
Fabulous, challenging course - a real variety of holes, very attractive.
