A very nice routing which is slightly spoilt by the intrusion of trees in a few places. You can't really say the club have swamped the course with the things but a few bunkers left painfully lost amongst the trees provide the telltale signs that with a misplaced desire to leave their mark, greens committees have imposed trees onto the playing areas, narrowing the course and therein detracting from the strategic aspects of the game for the low capper whilst frustrating the novice. A secondary effect of course is the failure of turf to become truly firm in the summer, making the course like a rice field in winter. But for all this, it's a good layout and I personally think the set of par 3's is particularly strong. Maybe guilty of some mismanagement but certainly worth a game.
Whilst certainly nothing to get too excited about, the layout at Southwick requires lower handicappers to think their way round whilst affording lesser players the opportunity to compete. Bit of a slow start over the first couple of holes but it progressively picks up to provide a sometimes surprisingly tricky challenge. The supposedly light rough has been allowed to get a bit too thick during this extremely wet summer - missing a fairway by two foot and losing your ball is neither big nor clever course maintenance - and the odd marker post wouldn't go amiss but, overall, we left Southwick feeling we had made a good choice.
I was a member at SPGC for about 9 years in the mid 90s to mid noughties. I currently play at Cardross GC in Scotland. What you see is what you get! It has come on in leaps and bounds with much much much improved Pro shop, it couldn't have been worse in the past (John Green)..... The changing facilities are now like those you would expect at a private members club. The course may be a bit short, but this is balanced by having quite small nice quality greens! The 04th & 16th are the real card wreckers and the 10th is a tease do you or don't you go for the carry... Darren and co in the club house provide a great service again an improvement on the old guard.. The only critiscisms I can muster is that if a RN member is on leave he struggles to get on the course on a weekday morning due to the 'vets' Is it still 3 weekday mornings? Also a SPGC HC doesn't travel too well.. All in all go see for yourself, I took a 5 HC guest there afew years back and he loved it!
The first impressions I found were very positive. A nice warm welcome in the pro shop which incidentally, was very well stocked, a good start I thought. The green fees too were good value. There was no doubt that preceeding my round the weather had been awful and heavy rain had made the course vey wet in places. I spoke with the Manager on completion and a plan was now in place to address these issues. That said, I found the greens in excellent condition and the overall challenge was a good one. The 1st is a good opener and the 4th over the River Wallington is a good hole to test your approach play. The 7th was a lovely looking hole and I thought the 13th has the potential to be a card wrecker if the club add some bunkers to tighten it more. The 15th is unique with the remains in the background and even though it's 120 yds, you just have to find the green. Following my round the food was of good quality with a good choice and the pricing wasn't a 'rip off' either which was refreshing! Similar to the pro shop, the staff were friendly and I even heard laughter from the kitchen; whch is sadly missing at some golf clubs! My visit was to assess Southwick Park for a society day in the summer and needless to say we shall visit this club. A good test of golf with friendly staff; what more can you want?
I am now a member at this golf course and it plays very good in the winter months and especially well in the summer months, lovely scenery and some very challenging holes, a must for any golfer in the area STRETCH ARMSTRONG
I have played this golf course twice now and have really enjoyed the experience of playing this course. Both times i have played in the RNI Divers championship and have been treated to very good course. There are many challenges with this golf course if you haven't played it before as i found out. The clubhouse is a very friendly atmosphe and i am looking forward to playing there next year. Regards Darren
