6 reviews of Stoneyholme Municipal Golf Course
The group I was with played on Tuesday 29th June and compared to haltwhistle which we played a day earlier, this course is great! It's a council run municipal and it is very well maintained. The greens were fantastic and each hole was different to the last (which certainly wasn't the case at Haltwhistle). We only paid £12 to play and value for money wise you'd be hard pressed to find better in the area. All the staff were friendly and very helpful and the food we had after play was delicious and reasonably priced. Great course. Overall 7 out of 10.
Played on Tuesday 29 June 2010. What a lovely council run course indeed, situated in site of Carlisle FC literally a driver away the course meanders through treelined lush fairways. A very flat course with only 2 small climbs to 2 greens. Picturesque and the greens were in decent nick concidering the lack of rain lately! Clubhouse nice, lovely pint, I had no food but some of my colleagues did and it looked nice. We noticed alot of players going out so very popular and I am not surprised at £14 during the week! A course I would play again if in the vacinity
I have played this course on numerous occasions (when visiting the in-laws who are members) and rate it as one of best Municipals I have played on, especially for condition / upkeep of the course. The River Eden runs adjacent to the Course and the River Petteril affects the 1st, 15th & 16th Holes. The course has got slightly easier recently (11th, 12th 13th & 14th), as approx. 300 trees were uprooted on the course in the floods a couple of years ago, but re-planting is ongoing. However, there are hundreds of trees still left !! The Par 3s on the front nine are either up or downhill. But apart from these holes, it is a flat course. The greens are fairly flat (4 greens have two tiers) with subtle undulations but nearly all the times I have played are in great condition. The fairways are not excessively wide but there a certain areas on a number of fairways that need to be hit accurately to enable a second shot into the greens. Only fault would be the size of some of the T boxes which can show signs of wear and tear. The Clubhouse, Pro Shop & facilities have all been re-furbished (again due to the floods). The restaurant / food are good value for money (recommend the Cumberland Sausage on the Menu proper stuff !!). As with most Municipals, it can become busy, especially @ weekends (£13.50 for a round), with some punters not knowing what golf etiquette is about. However, still worth a visit if you are up that way. P.S. I believe the ClubHouse Building was 3ft underwater during the floods. Have a drink on the patio outside the bar area, overlooking the River Petteril. Also look @ the flood banks they are building to see how high the water level was during the floods. Unbelievable !!
Stoneyholme is a very nice course to play even if you are a beginner like myself. The greens are very smooth and fast and the stream that runs through the place has a very strong ball-magnet attached to it. For info the green fees are now £9.75 weekdays and £12.50 weekends.
Easily one of the best municipals in the Country. Very challenging, greens in good nick and course always has Greenkeepers working on it. A credit to Carlisle, Cumbrian golfers are lucky gets!
This is one of the better municipal golf courses that I have played. It will give golfers of all handicaps a stiff test but it can get busy at peak times.
