I have took up golf recently and find this course to be challenging but accommodating for a new golfer. It provides the chance to play all types of shots and is not discouraging for the new players or high handicappers thanks to wide fairways and large greens. Staff were welcoming and the views were excellent. On a wet windy day the course will hold some water and change considerably but overall an excellent experience.
Read the reports below and they seem out of date! Played Towneley twice in recent weeks, while visitibg brother in law. Both of us were really pleased with what we found. Course does hold the water, rather, and bottom holes were rather soggy, but all in all, course was well looked after. Visitors please note - they've changed the order of the holes, so the card can throw you out (please print new ones!) and it's not that easy to navigate! Nevertheless some very interesting holes, including first which is a right angled dogleg (anyone want to risk flying the trees first shot?!) I love the final few holes. They're obviously older and shorter holes, but lovely to play, particularly the par threes. I reckon for a pleasant afternoon's golf, you can't go far wrong. Oh - and both times greeted very amicably by everyone in the shop...
Not a terribly difficult test of golf with wide fairways and relatively large greens. However, it is great fun to play and visitors are always made welcome. Two holes stand out from the rest - the par 4 9th with a drive (right in front of the clubhouse balcony) down a fairly steep hill and then an iron from a downhill lie to a green flanked by bunkers and a steep drop off area to the left. The second stand out hole is the par 4 15th with a great risk/reward decision to take from the tee. I would recommend Towneley but note that it is very busy in the summer and at weekends and there is no way to book a tee time without purchasing a booking reference number for the year (though this is pretty cheap).
not played course yet finding it difficult to get tee times for sunday morning but the phone number is not in use the new number is 01282438473 hope i,ve helped some people.
The course is enjoyable to play though the 9 hole course is a little more challenging then the 18. Greens are in fairly poor condition and need extensive work during the next few months. I am looking at becoming a member providing the work gets carried out.
this is were i started playing july 2002. friendly staff coupled with a tough and challenging course for a beginner have made it very enjoyable so far. i think it would give handicappers a good test too. watch out for the changing face of the course after a downpour though.
Very good value and well located just off the M65. The course is ideal for the mid to high handicaps, lower handicapped golfers may find the course a bit easy but still nonetheless fun to play.
