This course represents excellent value for money, £11 a head for a 3 ball. It is always open being a well drained downland course on chalk. 2 or 3 of the greens are not brilliant and there are some serious mole hills on the 3rd,11th & 12th fairways but generally the course is in reasonable condition. The changes in elevation are a challenge and you need to be reasonably fit, (there are no buggies)I always enjoy the round there and we adjourn to the Black Lion Pub, 5 min drive into Brighton for a beer because the clubhouse is a bit soul less in the late afternoon.
I paid £15 to play on 4th July but as 2 could have played for that amount will adjust the green fee to £10 in assessing value for money. The course is now managed by My Time Golf who have plans to improve the course. As the course is on downland owned by the National Trust it will never be manicured but the greens tohugh not looking great played ok with some awkward borrows. Watch out for rabbit holes on the fairways & in the rough. The course is only 5700yds from the whites but the generally small greens and constant elevation changes make even most of the short par 4's less easy than one might expect. The 9th is a great par 3 at 240yds across a valley to a tiny green. Other good holes are 2,12,13 & 16. The layout has 2 loops. The first of 6 contains both par 5's but I preferred the 2nd loop which is more on the downs. Although the 1st is a poor hole the course is well worth a try especially with 2for1 and the condition is much better than at the time of the last report. It is exposed to the elements so perhaps not somewhere to book well in advance unless you only pay on the day. Very accessible from A24/A27.
Played here in April 2009. Big mistake. The course could be so good. Who ever laid out the holes did a good job and there are sweeping fairways to well sited greens in the beautiful Sussex Downs. From the road you can look down on the course and think that would be an interesting place to play, and so it could, but oh ... the neglect! The greens make my lawn (not a good lawn) look immaculate, the bunkers have torn liners coming through, weeds growing through the sand and are impossibly overgrown with other lower forms of Downs life, and the rough next to the fairways has nettles and brambles guaranteed to sting and snag through your trousers. No course guide available at the start and no great welcome offered! The course has serious ups and downs and as such could be a great cardio vascular work out (if you want that sort of thing), so, coming off the 18th green feeling as if we'd been on an assault course rather than a golf course, refreshment would have been nice. The bar closed at 3.00. We finished at 2.35, but the barman had finished early today! Overall impression - if someone bought this it could be made into a good course. There are some excxellent holes and a sensible challenge is set. As it is there is minimal maintenance and neglect rules. Very sad, but the golf is very cheap and that does that mean that golfers deserve no better?
Played this course recently when on a business trip to Brighton. It is challenging due to the hilly ground it is on - especially on the back 9. The course definitely has a "links" feel to it, even though you can't see the sea from it. Course was not in great condition as there were lots of divot marks and the greens had not been mown that recently. However, it was excellent value for only £8 to play a twilight (after 5pm) round.
My wife and me played this course on the 16th July 2006. This course is okay and set in several valleys with lots of challenges. Tee boxes were not satifactory, the green were not mowed the fairways were very brown and hard. Some of the holes on the back nine were really challenging. Absolutely value for the little money we paid. Clubhouse okay, members are quiete.
i think its a hard course on the back 9 but the food is great
course much improved in the last year.societies now welcome any weekend. pro and club very helpful.managed to drive the green on the long par 3 9th hole.wow!
On the plus side - Great Value, scenery & location, interesting hilly layout. On the negative side - very poor winter mat tees, overplayed and not in mint condition.
full fried breakfast is excellent and cheap - a great start to the day.\r\n\r\nWatch out for all the rabbit holes along the fairways
