Course was in reasonable condition and enjoyed our round of golf. Greens not in brilliant condition but then I suppose we have had some awful weather although my home course is in better condition I must say. Club house looked good and had some stunning views. Food good with good service although there was a lack of bar staff which resulted in us having to wait for a drink for over 10 minutes.
Myself and my Society played one Friday morning and had a nice welcome from the secretary and kitchen staff, in particular a lovely smiley young lady who cheered us all up no end. Even a few Members said good morning. The course was immaculate with the greens being just how we like them.... fast. It was beautiful scenery and a very peaceful location. After our much enjoyed game and shower we retired to the bar which incidently had been done up from last year and was looking very nice. We sat down to a three course meal which was superb and had the smiley waitress again!! I wanted to go up to the office to show my appreciation and was greeted again with a nice smile from the young lady in the office, the secretary then came and shook my hand and asked if we had enjoyed the day. Everyone was so very welcoming. We have been going to West Kent for years and have slowly seen it improve over the last 4-5 years. We would certainly recommend any society or green fees to play at such a prestigious course. Only one thing a couple of the old farts in our group had problems with the slightly hilly parts of the course but they would consider a buggy next year... yes booked in already.
West Kent is a wonderful little course set within a beautiful area. Although it is not the longest or most difficult of courses, it is maintained to a very high standard. The greens, tees and fairways are some of the best in Kent, and rarely anything less than perfect. The design is remeniscent of some of the greats, using natural sloping to define greens and fairways. The course opens gently with a short par 4 before throwing in possibly the most difficult driving hole in the area. Holes 2 through to the par 5 7th really require you to keep your concentration, with the latter requiring 2 amazing shots for even the best of golfers to get close under regulation. The next 4 holes allow you to catch your breath before the long par 5 12th. If the wind is in your face you will require 3 well struck shots to get home, and even then your par isn't safe. The next 5 holes really play into the mercy of the wind. Do not take anything for granted, the wind can swirl around the valley in mysterious ways. The 15th hole, but for a little more green and fairway definition, wouldn't look out of place on a tour event. Sixteen has to be one of the most interesting greens around, it is not uncommon to have your back to the hole when putting. The 18th is a good end to a strategic round. Long hitters can fly the bunkers in the fairway and leave a short shot to a receptive green. The members at West Kent are very welcoming and the staff are friendly. The food is well prepared and served with a smile. This course is well worth a try if you can. Membership is reasonable and brings with it many social benefits.
My wife and me played this excellent parkland course today (27.07.2007). The welcome was okay and cool. The pro shop is little but well sorted. The members are quiet and helpful. Definitely we enjoyed the day on this well groomed course (tee boxes and greens were excellent - the fairways quite brown, because of this summer season).
I joined West Kent as a member in April 2005 and have never since regretted it. The value for money (especially for the juniors) is out of this world. The atmosphere around the club is excellent and both members and guests are made to feel at home. The condition of the course is brilliant and you can never have any complaints about the conditions after a bad round. The greens are excellent and very fast during the summer months. Overall I have been very happy to be a member at West Kent for just under a year and will be re-joining in April 2006.
