This is probably our favourite course in the Borders.Played last weekend and the course was in fantastic condition as always. Some really tough long Par 4's and its a good test with quick greens.Hit the Par 3 green on the last for the first time ever with a 3 iron. Its a tough finish at 222yds uphill!

ReaLly enjoyed this couse. Friendly welcome in the pro shop, first class course. Like others have said don't be fooled by the card, there are some demanding holes. The last two par 3s are especially tough are could ruin any card. Nice greens and spectacular views. Well worth a visit

myself and 2 playing partners played at west linton on the 14th september and it has immediately jumped straight my top ten of courses. the weather on the day was a mixed bag to say the least, with 30mph winds and torrential rain while we were on the 9th and 16th but it really didnt change my view of the course. i can certainly testify that the greens have excellent drainage! the clubhouse is a modern building which gives you magnificent views over the course and the hills on the horizon. the course itself runs all the way around a large section of central heathland. the 1st hole poses a question immediately to wether or not to take the driver off the tee. its a relativley short par 4 but carries danger all the way along it with OOB down the right, the heavy heathland all the way up the left and 2 large bunkers either side of the green. par or birdie the 1st and you can set yourself up for a great days scoring, especially as the 2nd is a short par 3 before moving onto the 3rd where the course begins to show its teeth a little. the course was in superb condition when we played with the greens running extremely true and the turf on the fairways was just immaculate to play off. it really is set up for a fantastic days golf and i cant wait to return in the very near future. overall 9 out of 10

we played west linton on tuesday 14th september on a cool, showery and very windy day but despite the weather the course was absolutley fantastic! on arrival you gain entry to the clubhouse after the pro gives you the code key for the front door. once inside you are treated to the beautiful views of the course itself, the heathland and the surrounding hills. the first hole instantly poses the question to hit either the driver or a medium iron off the tee for position as there is out of bounds down the right, the heathland and trees cut down the left and there are 2 large bunkers surrounding the green. The second is a quaint par 3 measuring around 125 yards before you go onto the 3rd which sees the course circling the heathland in the centre. i think it could be a really good scoring course in calm conditions as straight drives would be rewarded with a shot into the greens which ran true. all of the holes were in tip top condition and have something of noteable interest about them and its a course i would love to be a member of if i lived in the area. i would recommend the course to anyone and it has jumped instantly into my top ten of courses. its just that good! overall 9 out of 10

Having played here in 2005 this was my first visit back and boy I was not disappointed. I could remember holes 1, 16, 17 & 18 as they feature on there scorecard but once I got out there more memories came flooding back. We arrived with torential rain but this stopped as we took to the first tee, course was immaculate as were the greens and may I add tees as you find at some clubs the tees never get the care and attention they deserve. A complete joy to play with possibly only hole 15 not doing much for me but every other hole has something different and challenging about it. We played in 30mph winds and had two hailstorms half way around and with one hole to go so got soaked even though they lasted only 5 mins each! Great cabin/toilet on hole 12 with tea making facilities (take a cup as there were not any there). I shot a gross 84 off 18 handicap in those conditions, I did play well particularly off tee and on green, lower handicappers could rip this course up in perfect conditions, a great course to bring your group/society which I will certainly be doing possibly in late 2011

Just returned from trip which included such notable names as Downfield and Carnoustie, but where to play on the way home? Having been here a couple of times previously the decision from the group was unanimous and we weren't disappointed. The usual hearty and cheery welcome in the Pro Shop, a course in excellent condition, a superb variety of holes in a heathland setting with stunning views all around, all finished off with some of the best and most hospitable caterers you could wish to come across - and it only cost us £20 each!! A genuine no-brainer fantastic!

Day three of our tour of the Borders found us at West Linton on 10/9/2008, you are greeted with lovely views from the club house this is a rolling parland course, with quite easy walking fairways. The course was very busy, it was the last of the mid week medal competition for members and two societies’ were also out there, so play was a little slow. We got a friendly welcome in pro shop and pleasant members in the bar whilst we waited for our tee time. Whilst some people may look at the statistics for this course and believe it’s a bit on the short side, don’t be fooled, many holes play beyond their yardage and carful placing of your ball off the tees is necessary on all the holes. The course was in great condition considering the amount of rain that had obviously fallen in recent weeks, the greens and bunkers were very playable. There are several long par three’s and beware the 17th & 18th they are two of the most punishing holes to finish any round, a good and fair challenging golf course. Only one moan, and its my usual one, no marker posts at the side of the fairway at 150 yards, the discs in the middle of the fairway are fine, but only if you are on top of them. I have always found such omissions tend to slow up the game for visitors in particular. But this is course I want to return to in future years and would recommend it to any visitor regardless of their handicap.

Have to disagree with some of the comments about West Linton not being a long course. At 5900 yards it appears deceptively short, but at a par of 68 and with five par 4's over 430 yards off the yellow tees it is a thorough test of golf for even low handicappers. Great course, beautiful views and fabulously manicured fairways. Just watch out for the weather which can be very changeable!!

I had tried to play here last year but was defeated by fog. My booking for the first week in Dec 07 looked to be threatened by rain but when I called the club I was assured everything would be ok - and it was. The guy in the pro shop was really friendly and explained the local rules, mainly the 'red line' which avoids using the fairway as you pick up and place beyond a line painted either side of the fairway. I think there was only 1 temporary green and the greens, tees and course in general were in excellent condition given the time of year. Teed off in calm enough conditions but the wind got up during the round and some holes into the wind were a real test needing 2 or 3 clubs more than I would normally take. Anything hit high was at risk and punch or low bump and run shots are not really my game. But it was a wonderful course, visually very attractive surrounded by the Pentland hills. Finding your way around was easy enough and it's not a long or demanding course but requires thought-out accurate shots to what are smallish greens and punishing rough. There's only 1 par 5 off the yellow tees although the 15th could easily be made a par 5 at 500 yds plus. With the wind directly behind though it was reachable in 2 the day I played. There are several testing par 3's (12th, 17th and 18th). The 17th was a real brute straight into the wind and I was lucky to escape with a double bogey. With the wind in your favour the 18th is not as intimadating as it looks and I made par to finish what was a really enjoyable round on a very good track. Excellent looking clubhouse which alas I didn't have time to visit.

A challenging course which is relatively flat. A beautiful clubhouse overlooks several holes on the course. The Fairways were in top notch order for April and so were the greens. Can be quite a test in the wind, some long holes which need accurate shots, with a great par 3 to finish over 200yards!! Good food and plenty of it when you order.

Highly recommended moorland course set in the Pentland hills offering a true challenge of golf. The starting hole may set you up for what you think could be an easy round but the 17th & 18th can certainly ruin a good score. Signature hole must be the 230 yard up-hill par-3 finish. Drainage must be good as I've never had to play temp greens or winter tee boxes.

I played this course for the first time in a recent open handicap competition. Although I played abysmally on the day I found the course very impressive, the fairways had been beautifully manicured and the greens were excellent. The course had a picturesque mountainous backdrop yet the course itself was as flat as a pancake (apart from the 18th).It is not the most difficult of courses in that it is not overly long and neither is the rough too punishing. It is a course that is well worth a visit to any visitor in the area.

This scenic course is set among beautiful heathland and mountainous countryside. It winds it’s way around wooded thickets and boggy rough. The course design is in keeping with it’s surroundings, giving you the feeling that it has been there forever, it had a different character from the other courses in the vicinity we played. The greens were in decent condition, they were tricky and quick and often well guarded by bunkers. The inevitable wind compounded the challenge although the locals told us that it’s usually blowing harder! The closing holes were tough with lengthy par 4’s, blind long iron shots and lots of rough. The 18th was one of the most terrifying I’ve ever seen. You don’t need OOB and deep rough either side of a 230 yard uphill par 3, but that’s what you get here. We had a thoroughly enjoyable day here. The clubhouse has a great view over the course.

Our second year playing here as part of our tour of the borders with “freedom of the fairway” tickets. What every one says about the views is stunningly true. Your memory of the course is dominated by how well you finish on the 17 & 18 holes, both difficult and long par threes. Play them badly and you go away with an unhappy perspective of the course in general, play them well and you are riding on a cloud. I am just glad I don’t have play here when it blows a gale, I would not fancy my chances of getting down in 5/6 in a medal round. Good lunchtime food served in a very attractive clubhouse.

We played this course as part of a 12-course tour of the Borders. We rated this the 2nd best course. Not especially long but with narrow fairways, nightmarish rough and hard small greens it was the toughest challenge of the week. With one exception we all made a hash of it. The 18th was the most frightening hole we played all week. I was delighted with my bogey four. A must on a golfing trip to the Borders.

This course is a gem and a well kept secret. Situated on Slipperfield Moor above the village of West Linton, the course is dominated to the south west by Mendick Hill and offers superb views of the surrounding countryside including. from the 8th tee, the Lyne Valley and the hills of upper Tweeddale. The golf course itself circumnavigates vast tracts of moorland which serve as a wildlife reserve for no end of animals, birds and reptiles. The course is not overlong, but it doesn't have to be, being endowed with small well protected greens and punitive rough. The opening three holes are a gentle intro to what lies ahead and the course builds and builds until you are confronted with the last three holes, a long par 4 and two long par threes, which combine to produce one of the toughest finishes I have played anywhere. The last is a classic, confronting the player with a gully in front of the tee, out of bounds to the right, oblivion to the left and a severe, right to left sloping green, protected by 4 bunkers.

Played This Course 24hrs After Tackling The Jubilee Course At St Andrews, And It Was A Completely Different Experience! Narrow Fairways With Punishing Rough And Enough Pot Bunkers To Aggrevate The Average American Golfer. Gorgeous Mountain Vistas On Almost Every Hole. Downsides: 1) Located Near Edinburgh, But Not The Easiest Place To Find (i Was Lucky Enough To Be Driven There By A Member), 2)equipment Rental Virtually Nonexistant...
