Played a few weeks ago here. Quite poorly, so difficult to judge the course properly. Overall impression was no single hole or view stood out. Like others have said, it's not a flash course. Exceptionally good green. Although temporary greens were in evidence, they were not in use on my visit (but i would advise you check before setting out in autumn/winter). Clubhouse and buildings were oddly disappointing, as for the age of the club, expected something with character and age, but that shouldn't distract from anyone's enjoyment of a good course. No delays and everyone was very pleasant. Course perhaps had a few too many holes of a short and similar length - although that's a lasting impression rather than said checking the card to confirm it. Not a course on which you will regularly reach for the driver, but one to make you plot your way around.
Played here October ,09. Surprisingly ,for a highly regarded course ,i thought it was fairly uninspiring .It's in pleasant tree lined surroundings but i didn't think the holes were interesting enough .There are some decent holes but interspersed with too many so-so ones. It didn't have ,for me ,that much sought after 'feel' that you get at some courses. I wasn't that keen on the layout .It felt like a long walk round ,as the front 9 was long-winded & on the back 9 you go over a road & play 4 holes & then 14 is near the clubhhouse & you head back out again. The course doesn't seem to drain as well as others i've played this winter & the fairways were a bit patchy in places as they haven't recovered enough from not having fairway irrigation over the summer ,which meant playing from some 'thin' lies from the fairways & around the greens . We received a warm welcome from everyone we encountered at the club. So overall, a course to tick off ,but not one that i'd be that enthused to play again. Kevin B.
played the wildernesse on 05/05/05,second time played the course in last year and couldnt of been more impressed. the course was in marvelous condition with greens and fairways spot on.i would say not a overly hard course if you are straight off the tee but some lovely holes particular on the back nine.food and welcome from staff very good and would recomend you play if you get a chance.green fee is a little steep but you have to pay for quality and thats what you get,you seem to get better deals with societies packages, great course, great service, great day
A pleasant well prepared course with good greens. However, it does not provide a test of golf normally associated with Open qualifying courses -relatively wide fairways, short holes, easy par 5s. Not bad though.
I've played this course half a dozen times this year with various club members. It is always immaculately prepared - fast and true greens, impeccable fairways. Never gets crowded. Not a flashy course at all but a serious test of golf -which is why they play the Open regional qualifying tournament here each year. There were plenty of contenders scoring over 80 off the white tees this year, which gives you some idea of the test.
This course is perfectly nice, but not worth paying around £30 for. The member are all rather stuffy and not at all friendly, however the pro is a nice chap. only play here if you have money to burn
