4 reviews of Woodford Golf Club
I played this course yesterday after even more rain the night before. Although only a 9 hole course the use of different tee positions on many holes on the back 9 make it more varied. There are a couple of points worth noting: because of Epping Forest bylaws players are obliged to wear an significant item of red clothing ie shirt, jumper, coat etc. The other point is that, as the course is in Epping Forest, you will meet many people all over the course exercising their dogs - this can be most disconcerting! I will endorse what other reviewers said about the speed of the greens and that, although there are no bunkers, the rough can be quite penal. Also there are small ditches crossing some of the fairways that are not marked as water hazards and not always immediately obvious. We found that all the members that we met very friendly and helpful and using a 'County Card' the course was good value.
Woodford is an unusual short course with only 9 greens but it is a real test of golf, short but tight with some of the fastest green in the East of England. There are no bunkers on the course but don't be fooled as the mature royal forest, gorse and green provide ample protection. Accuracy and straightness is essential. Assessing the course from the card and yardage the mid-low handicapper would expect to score very well, but somehow the combination of tricky greens, forest and slopes combine to make low scores very illusive. It is an excellent little course, try it!
Woodford Golf Club is a nice little golf club, situated just to the north of London. The course offers only 9 holes, but is an exceptional challange especially in the summer. The course is not overly long, but is fairly tight and unforgiving. In summer the course can get very hard and fiery, and possibly have some of the slickest greens in Essex. There is not a grain of sand to be found on the course, but given the tight nature of the course, they are not really needed. The clubhouse has excellent facilities and the Pro Shop is well stocked, if on the small side. Woodford represents excellent value for money and is well worth a visit.
Woodford is a unusual course in that it has nine actual holes but when played from the back tees, two different tees are used for the hole. IE 1st and 10th. Some of them make the hole different because they play from a different angle, some are just a few feet to the left. It is situated in a picturesque part of Epping Forest, and the large oak trees come into play on several holes. The course is not particularly long, but can be a bit tight on some shots. It is rarely busy and is handy if you just want nine holes to get your eye in for a practice. The greens can vary for the time of year. Drainage is fair on most of the course. One little quirk is that you must also wear red at all times (thats scarlet red not dark red)... after an incident there a few years back ;-). Some of the members can be a bit stuffy but generally they are a good bunch. Enjoy it but dont expect the most incredible experience of your life....just a steady round.
