Although I have lived in the general area (under 20 miles) for 22 years, this is the first time I have ever played this course. Shame because it's a good track. On first impressions, it's rather flat and open, but the further round you get, the undulations and fairways close in on you. Course of two fairly distinct 9's, the back 9 feeling much more remote and rural...and much tougher. Make sure you make the most of the "relatively" easier front 9. Green's very quick but slighty pockmarked in places. Think that's got more to do with the hard winter, rather than a critism of the greens staff because I've experienced greens like it several times this spring including my home club. Clubhouse staff friendly, though staff fairly young and inexperienced. Why the waitresses brought the condiments, sauces etc, 10 minutes after our society had all finished our meals raised a few eyebrows. Finally the large expansive balcony overlooking the course was a wonderful place to sit after our round and enjoy a drink....especially on a glorious spring afternoon. And ashtrays were provided and smoking allowed, it was outdoors after all....Take a note Haverhill!

this was the best course i played while in essex during 2006, the greens were so good to putt on, they were some of the best greens i have ever putted on. the layout was really good & got some really good photos. it felt like i was the only person on the course, which i love. the good thing was it was generous off the tee but the rough still could punish you. best holes 4,9,10 & 13 was the stand out. i shall return.

OK I used to be a member there, but all in all a thoroughly decent course. Perhaps will never prove to be the greatest test of inland golf in the UK as Henry Cotton once suggested but, well, not at all bad. Quite long, but also quite wide. A few very testing water holes - 14th especially has a great second from between 170 and 150 yards to a narrow, water protected green. Greens in recent years have been very consistent and fairways and bunkers improve...just need to sort out the tees! Good one.
