We played Hillsborough on a gloriously sunny day with a slight breeze and it is right up there with the best courses I have played all year - worth the 160 mile round trip and the green fee. The staff were all unfailingly helpful and the course itself was in fantastic condition - well manicured fairways and true greens. It gets off to a tough start, as mentioned by others, with a 430 uphill par 4 with a narrow fairway and OOB down the left. The 2nd is a short par 3 but with a sloping green meaning a putt from above the hole is a tough proposition, and the course gets no easier, as the 3rd has one of the narrowest fairways I have seen anywhere. Some great par 3's, a couple of driveable par 4's, and a finishing par 5 which measures 630 yards from the whites, Hillsborough genuinely does not have a weak hole anywhere. You need to be straight from the tee all the way round - if you aren't, bring plenty of balls. And I echo what the last reviewer said - how refreshing for a society to be allowed to eat in the clubhouse in golfing attire rather than sitting sweating in jacket and tie. Well worth a visit - put it on your list of must plays.

We played Hillsborough Golf Club with our society on Sunday 22nd June 2009. They offer some 2:30pm tee offs on a Sunday which we took advantage of. I have to say the whole day from start to finish was just superb. Firstly they relaxed the stupid strict old school rule allowing us to dine with our golfing attire on. The service and staff throughout the day was just superb, the golf pro’s were helpfull and drove out our nearest to the pin and longest drive markers out. The kitchen staff were polite and service was fantastic. We had a three course meal after play which for £9 was outstanding value. The course is simply “mint”. The views over Sheffield as you look back down the first from the green and on the 9th tee were just breathtaking. The first three holes are described as tough the first an uphill par 4, the second a tight par three enclosed in trees. The holes just continue, when you look back I really can’t pinpoint a weak hole. The course is just superb. And as you start to make your way back to the club house some of the holes are just superb. The par 4 17th stood out for me tempting you to drive the 280 odd yards. I feel the bunkers are used sensibly and the condition of the greens and tees were immaculate, in fact the greens were so true they were like lightening so most approach shots had to be aimed before the green as to roll on. Be warned the course is rock hard and the trees and rough make wayward shots, lost shots, finding your ball is almost impossible so you need to be straight and accurate ! From a society point of view the club, course and staff are all just superb, the facilities are all together and overall it’s a superb venue for a golf society . For £42 we had a bacon roll and coffee on arrival 18 holes on a superb course, the best we’ve played and a three course meal. I think that’s fantastic value and hats off to the club, we’ll definitely be back !!!!

Travelled 60 miles to play here yesterday on a friends recommendation and was very impressed. Greens were excellent, true and pretty quick for a woodland course at this time of year. Course is not particularly long but does have a nice variety of holes. The 3 par 3's are all nice holes, a couple of driveable par 4's if you want to take on the bunkers and some tough holes to keep the big hitters happy. Bring your A game to the 1st tee, its 430 yards uphill into a prevailing wind with OOB on the left all the way to the green!! Oh, and its a narrow fairway. I bet a few medal cards have been torn up here! We thought the 30 quid green fee was good value. Will be back.
