Newton St. Cyres Golf Course

I have been playing this course for a long time, they have just added an additional 9 holes which makes a fantastic 18 hole course now. The new 10th hole is a 449 yard, Par 4, 7 terraced fairway and is just fantastic, like nothing I have ever seen before. Great views from Dartmoor to Sidmouth and Blackdown hills. You have to play the 10th, you won't believe it, it’s great.

Newton St Cyres GC is a classic 9 hole hidden treasure in the heart of the Devon countryside, yet still within just a few miles of the centre of Exeter. Opened about 7 years ago, it was still unknown to me and it was a toss of a coin to have a look here or another new 9 holer, Exminster, just a few miles the other side of Exeter. And my, what a good choice!. On arrival, a smiling face, always a good sign, and £10 for a "quick" 9, and then straight into the action, with a cracking uphill 388yd Par 4 where the approach to the green just must be on the left hand side......believe me!!. After an iffy first drive, I was happy to escape with a 6 after a few more very iffy shots. The 2nd, a 489 par 5 returned downhill parallel to the 1st and with a helpful following wind ( not the usual direction I would think), managed to reach the green in 2 to recover a bit from the first. A walk over the road to another section of the course to an absolute glorious 152 yd Par 3 where just the top of the pin can be seen amongst some very well made mounds - although very man made, it is a very attractive hole. And so it goes on, there is just not a weak hole on the entire course, and indeed for two circuits, brings a very respectable Par 72 course of 6362 yards. Yes, it is still all new, but the greens were as good as most I have seen this year, maybe slightly slow, but in superb condition, and many with very subtle slopes and curves, and many well protected behind some very well placed mounding. Whoever designed this course certainly had his head screwed on for it is a very attractive layout and one where the interest is held on every hole, and if this is also maintained on the furthur 9 holes that have just been started, then one can guarantee a fantastic full course in time. As it is, it is as good a 9 hole course as any around, and a test for any grade of golfer, and despite it being basically a pay as you play, do find it (take GPS or a map, it is well hidden!) and enjoy it.

Very good course, well run, well maintained, all levels of golfers will enjoy. For those starting golf, this course offers the chance to play, work on and improve there game. whist always remaining challenging and enjoyable. Layout of the holes offers a great challenge to the most experienced golfer, with no single round feeling the same. With great friendly service and great value for money. highly recommended course.
