4 reviews of Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club (West Course)

Played this course on a last minute t-time on a Saturday for £28. Can't fault the condition of the course. The greens were running true and fairways were in fantastic condition. The course is a classic old design, some great par 3's that test your iron play and some fantastic par 4's of varying lengths. It is a short course but don't let that out you off. If Royal Ashdown was nearer London it would be be regarded in the same bracket as the 3 W's or even the Berkshire. The course was very busy when we played and were stuck behind a succession of 4 ball's but even though it felt slow we were round in 4 hours. Great fun and we will be back.

We have played this course many times before and eventually lost interest on the basis of the condition of the course. On this occasion we played in early september and I must say that the course was in excellent condition. The fairways were nice and the greens were in well cut, fast and unpredictable. The course offers a good range of challenges although most of the difficulty lays in hitting the ball straight as opposed to distance. The lack of bunkers on the course makes a nice change but there is plently of rough to catch a wayward shot. The beautiful surroundings do make you feel isolated from the world and i have always found the course to be very quiet allowing you to play at your own pace. The facilites at the club house are very good, the pro shop staff are very helpful and polite, the bar well stocked and prices reasonable. My only criticism of the course is the constant stream of people using the course for walking their dogs or taking their afternoon stroll. With hundreds of acres of forest surrounding the course, it is infuriating that these people deem it their right to wander about all of the course, allowing their dogs to run free and they dont even seem to be in a hurry to get out of your way. Im sure this as much a bugbear for the course as it is the golfers, but theres nothing you can do about it so its a good job that the course seems to play at relaxed pace. I will certainly be going back there...next time i wont lose so many balls in that forest!!! All in all a good course for most levels of golfers in my opinion and excellent value, especially if you use two-for-one as we did.

Played the Royal Ashdown Forest West Course on 4 June 2009. I have been coming here once or twice a year for many years and I have never seen it in better condition. The greens were particularly good; very fast and difficult to read. Although its illustrious neighbour is a more sterner challenge due to its length, the West Course stands up well because of its tightness. The run of holes from 10 to 18 are especially good, with some stunning views and testing tee shots. The 18th hole is a very tough finish with a narrow stream cutting in across the fairway twice. Well worth a visit and good value.

The West Course is clearly inferior to its bigger and more esteemed brother but still packs a punch. If you think that, at a yardage of 5606, it’s going to be easy pickings then you may be forced to quickly reconsider. Firstly, it’s a par 68 - there’s only one par 5 here. And, secondly, many of the holes require accurate driving. Just as with the Old Course, there are no bunkers but, as the yardage book declares, this “does not make the challenge any easier.” In many ways, the course gets progressively better as you go round. The last six holes, all nearest the forest, form a great sequence that would grace many other courses; a couple of the holes almost have a Wentworth feel about them. The 16th is a picturesque par 3 (what a shame we had to play to a temp green); the 17th a beautiful and inviting par 4; and the 18th a suitably demanding closing hole (435 yards), which I even managed to par! We enjoyed a friendly welcome and, at £13-50 at the weekend with a 2-Fore-1 voucher, this is also definitely a bargain. I’ll be back for more at the Old Course soon. 6.5/10 ‘Young P’
