Played the full 18 on an evening this week, thoroughly enjoyed it after a nightmare (on my part) tee off on the first. Good course that requires some knowledge to locate a few of the greens. Well kept and good cliental for a public course.

As someone new to the game, and at a reasonably low standard, a friend and I decided to graduate from Pitch and Putt courses and try something a little harder (and longer), and so decided to try the 9 hole academy course. We found the course to be fantastic, the first hole in particular was a challenge as it is an uphill tee shot into a very sharp right hand Dog leg. As neither of us are of a driving standard to be able to cut the corner, we both settled for taking an easier shot onto the first part of fairway before hitting back down the hill towards the green. After that the weather, and the course was brilliant. following one of the coldest and harshest winters in years, the course was in great nick, and the holes, if not especially tough for beginers will certainly test your ability to hit the ball straight. Though our scores were not competitve in the slightest, we both went round in what we thought was a reasonable effort for two new golfers and thouroughly enjoyed the experience. So much so that we are going to play again this weekend. On top of that, the fella in the pro shop was very friendly and didnt cause a fuss that we had gotten a little bit lost on the way to the course and were 10 minutes late for our tee time. Thank you very much for the experience and we look forward to playing again. Jk

Played this course 16/3/07, found it fairly open and good value for the money we paid. The fairways would benefit form a trim and some of th bunkers need some more sand. Holes that stand out are 4,9 and 17. Would recommend this course

Visited Chesterfield as a society week-end 23-25/6/6, played three cracking courses.Although saved this one till last, we were not disapointed, very chalenging, very scenic and very friendly, a course in good condition, club house is well worth a visit at the end, don't just rush off. Strongly recomend this one. A word to the wise: book a buggy though, and take a camera.

Tapton was the last course on our recent municipal tour and oh boy did we save the best till last. This is not an easy course at all,But it is a real pleasure to play. two cracking holes where a decent carry over water is required and a six hundred plus yard par five just add to the challenge of a pretty demanding muni course. Beautiful parkland scenery all round and semi tame rabbits in the beer garden at the 19th. Aesthetically its top notch. Will definately do this again some day. Try it........ you'll love it.

Played on a Friday with my six year old son. Three hours fifty minutes for the full round ,even letting two twoballs through at that. Many a player could learn from that. Very enjoyable course , interesting holes. On two or three holes we were firing blind at a green over the brow of a hill. Could do with markers to give a clue as to which direction. Don't remember any 150 yard markers either. Still an enjoyable round. As good as many a private course i,ve played on.

Was lucky to play this course as we was booked into play at Birch Hall but couldnt find it and they had had a cancellation here. The Course was in a reasonable condition despite it being wet, however the greens could do with a bit of work as they was quite lumpy with old pitch marks. If you are walking this Course then I would say you need to be quite fit I was shattered by the 13th tee. The clubhouse is addequite and the price of beer and food is reasonable.

A good days golf to be had here.Three easyish holes then the fun starts ,4th hole 404 yds over water to a up hill fairway that slopes left to o/b. Then on to the 5th 625yds,let it rip!.Only three par 3s here but some nice golf to be played, good course in summer never played it in winter, definately worth a knock in summer.give it a go.

Great value 18 holes at £7.50. Having paid $240 for Pebble Beach, £78 for Royal Dornoch, £140 for Wentworth (West) and 160 Euro for San Lorenzo, it was quite a surprise to part with so little for what is a very adequate parkland course. Greens, fairways & tee boxes better than most municipal courses. Would I play their again? Yes. Give it a go, for only £7.50 and untypically very hot '03 English Summer sun. Could imagine that the fairways get very wet in the Winter months and that rounds could be slow in busy periods.

Well what N. H. is on about - I do not know? Maybe his/her eyes are painted on! I have played courses all over the country, cheap municipals, and the mighty Belfry, Glen Eagles, Celtic Manor. So what, well of course I don't claim Tapton to be in the same league as the championship courses of the UK, but neither is it £60+ for a round. I have certainly played few courses (round costing less than £15) that match the character and quality of Tapton. It had a bad patch in the 90's but has come out of it getting better and better. Few municipals offer a challenging 18, fun 9 holer and a pitch-and-put all at great prices. Obviously you wont find plump luscious green (Augusta) fairways after 1 month of baking summer heat, but when parting with £7.50 for a round - you will be far from disappointed. Plus they now have buggies to hire at a reasonable £12 a round. A bonus in the summer heat.

I played the Pitch 'n' Putt course for the first time recently. Looked pretty promising to begin with, but on getting to the first green, it proved that all the greens bar the last couple are in a shocking state. Perhaps Tapton should rename the first 7 holes to browns rather than greens. I wonder if my 2.40 charge goes to keeping the 18 hole course in good condition, rather than maintaining the P n P.

as a begginer i have to say firstly i think the dobbin is a great little course! after playing that a few times i have progressed onto the full course and its fantastic. i cant say ive played many courses but i really enjoy this one especially the 4th!! one day i'll beat my round of 133 but who cares i have fun and my mates get to have a good laugh. so go on try it!!

Having played the course for the last 20 years i can assure you that during the summer months this is the best value golf in the country (£7.50)Anything straying off the fairway will be severely punished. A warm welcome always awaits visitors in the clubhouse.

By far one of the most challenging courses in the county (with a little money spent, the BEST) no 2 holes are the same, from sloping lies to 620 yard holes, tapton must not be overlooked. Excellent value for money through the spring and summer months. TRY IT!

1ST Hole = Well, what can I say, looking at it from the tee, I would say that par would look a tasty bet. Dont be rash with your drive, and this could be the ideal round to an ideal day at the tapton golf course and leisure facilities. 2nd Hole = Again, much the same as the first, a relativly easy start to the round, and a good chance to make a solid start to your card. 3rd Hole = An interesting par 3, which requires an 8 iron to reach the pin. The green slants left to right, but please plaese watch out for that bunker!!! 4th Hole = Wow, this ones not for the faint hearted.Dont forget your flippers! If you top your drive am afraid your going for a little paddle. Hey, I do have to say, a corker of a hole, and to make 4 on this would be more than satisfactory. The other holes are good aswell, these are my top tips! the best holes are the 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 16th 17th 18th.

Good challenging course in the summer although money does need to be spent on it i.e. put some sand in the bunkers for instance. Do not play during the winter months as there are no proper winter greens, just holes the size of buckets in the middle of the fairway. The dobbin course is excellent for what it is and would recommend it if you fancy a quick 9 holes.

I Think Tapton is a good course for a municipal course. Although not the best course in the area, I feel that for £6.50, you cant go wrong!

A great course for beginers and pro's alike with both the 9 hole Dobbin and 18 hole Tapton. Great value and better than Grassmoor.

For a municipal course it is one of the best in Derbyshire. A tough test of golf. Can be very busy at weekends.

Posted by Steve Guard on 23/09/2001

one of the best value for money courses in the area now at £6.50 for a round , tough layout deters most hackers.

After GRASSMOOR - the worst course in Derbyshire.
