Played the course on 9 October and found the ladies' tees in awful condition. The bottom of some bunkers consisted of compacted mud. The removal of the par 4 14th hole and its replacement with a par 3 and a chipping area in the middle of the course has compromised it. It is definitely not a 5* course now.

Just played twice, Saturday and Monday of Bank Holiday. Superb course. Played off whites - over 7000yds - so suits longer hitters. Fairways in beautiful condition despite very dry period for few weeks. Greens pretty good in the main - a bit lumpy in places, but generally very receptive and reasonably quick. Layout looks a bit "back and forth" on the guide, but rarely even considered what was going on elsewhere. Errant teeshots get suitably punished, but it takes a pretty wild one to get into really serious trouble. Tends to favour "faders" of the ball off the tee - most dog legs are left to right. Changing fascilities are functional at best, but Pro shop and staff very good. Pub attached doubles as club house, and does what pubs do!! All in all a very good experience. We played as part of package through GolfBreaks so don't know actual cost of round, but a friend joined us last minute (happily dealt with by staff) and only paid £15 for round starting at 3pm (twighlight cost?) - superb value for money.

Played here in their Seniors open for the first time. This is a true gem of a course, designed by Peter Alliss & Dave Thomas and has been open for over 25 years now, it has matured to a true test of golf and yet playable by less able golfers. The greens are large and in tremendous condition, some of us found them on the slow side but in the main they were true without too many borrows. There were a sensible number of bunkers but placed to catch the average golfer plying off the yellow tees, perhaps the single figure boys playing off the whites would bypass some of them with ease. Warning, stay out of the trees or be prepared to chip out sideways and drop a shot, they are now creating the hazard they were obviously designed to be all those years ago. In our round of under 4 hours, we only heard one shout of “four”, another sign of good course design that adjacent fairways were well protected from wayward shots. On the subject of trees, take a few moments on your round to admire the tremendous assortment of different types, I would imagine they look beautiful in the autumn. A couple of minor criticisms, a few signs indicating the direction to the next tee, and a little bit of improvement to the changing area would not go amiss. . But the pro shop was well stocked and the staff excellent. Whilst we only had a sandwich and a pint in the pub attached to the clubhouse, it was superb. This municipal owned course rivals most propriety ones, and is well worth the reasonable fees, go and play it and enjoy the challenge.

A real gem – best municipal I have ever played. Greens in superb condition, course well maintained and staff really friendly / helpful. Relatively new but still presenting a challenge for golfers of all levels. When the trees grow and the course matures this will be a fantastic course. At £12.30 a round this is top of the value for money league without compromising quality or pleasure. Well done.

Excellent. Very long with plenty of opportunities to use your driver, very rewarding if you play the right shot and at the same time punishing to wayward shots. Some of the distances are a little hard to judge and the greens can cause problems, especially those surrounded by bunkers but all in all this is an amazing course and for the price, it is definitely one to play. Staff were fantastic, very helpful and patient. The only criticism I would have would be the weather but that's hardly Thorpe Wood's fault. 3rd hole is very tricky and the 5th is very very long. Only three par 3 holes so for a beginner it may be tough, but not too tough. Highly recommended. 9/10

Have heard many good things about this couse as one of the best municipal courses around. Well it is OK - a good test though lacking a bit of variety - I actually thought Orton Meadows was better for condition and variety. The fairways were a bit bare, and the greens were extremely slow. The yardage markers were also not obvious, could do with being both sides of the fairway, and often were hidden amongst the foliage. I would suggest if you want a really good municipal course in this area, check out Priors Hall at Corby. This is how greens should be - soft and fast and plenty of variety in the hole layouts.

fantastic. for a municipal course the layout is great with many challenging drives. the one comment about it needing more variety i believe is not accurate. there are many challenging drives and some strategically placed hazards. i am a big hitter and i have to go down in club selection frequently to avoid hazards. the third hole is in a beautiful setting with the Nene flowing all along the right side. SLICERS BEWARE! go there, pay your minimal green fees and enjoy the best municipal course in the country.

Everyone in Peterborough told me this was the best play and pay course ,which only confirmed the comments on this site .However maybe I expected to much for whilst the course is good value for money ,a test dye to its length and even in the wet is in good condition I left a bit disappointed .As someone who hits a fairly long sraight ball and plays off 20 I none the less like a varity of holes and this course to my mind does not provide that .After the first couple of holes you are faced one par 4 after another most of which are staight and very much of a muchness .By the end I was just hoping for a good dog leg holes . 5/10

Excellent challenging course. Superb conditions on the whole course. Very friendly staff from initial enquiry right thru to finish of round. A treat to play at less than £10. I look forward to returning to play again. Deserved rating as one of the best municipals in the country.

Very nice course with a great variety of holes. The two times I've played it the greens have been bumpy but not too bad. Always a great experience to play there.
