Avoid this course!! 6 of us played today at £14.70 each. We were told all greens were fine and course in good nick. Well it was a total bog, the fairways the rough and every green had puddles on it and this is August. I have never seen a course in such poor condition, i for sure will never return here.

Played yesterday - this is the first time I've been back to Walton Hall since 2003. The course was in fine condition, the greens were receptive but it needed a good "bash" to get the ball running to the holes, as these are the slowest greens I have played this year. My only criticism would be the tee boxes - unless you wanted to play off an area where you were leaning, the only flat areas on the boxes were well warn and untidy. However, I should'nt complain for a "muni" and a green fee of £14.50. I will certainly play here again in the next couple of summers, an excellent test of golf with some stunning holes, and very long par 3's.

Ex-member, Having played at Walton Hall since 2000, I have seen the course go into decline due to the lack of use and money being spent on it. However the council have spent alot of money on improvement eg Greens,Irrigation and teeing area's. The feed back I'm getting from a family member is that the course is now near excellent, and worth a visit. If I where to return to the UK I would have not difficulties in rejoining this golf club. So come on fellow GOLFERS don't lose this great course.

Walton Hall is a lovely, mature parkland course with fabulous views of the surrounding area. Its one of the most well kept muni's in Britain and a great test of golf. The course is relatively simple to locate, being signposted from the main road, the entrance is just over a very narrow bridge - make sure you sound your horn before going over! On arrival there is a decent pro shop and facilities include a practise area and a putting green. Last time I played the course it was in excellent condition - I know from experience however that in winter it can get very wet so check out the weather before playing. The first is a short par 4 that eases you into the round - there is out of bounds to the right though so slicers beware! Holes to look out for - 6th - Severely doglegging right, the sixth is a tough hole where longer hitters can go over the trees shortening it dramatically as the fairway slopes downward toward the green. However mis-hit shots will be punished - out of bounds lies down the right. A difficult green awaits also. 7th - Lovely par 3, the brilliance of this hole is that the butty van is your line!! The green is tough and well protected. 9th - Short par 5 with a tricky sloping fairway. Third shots must negotiate a brook that crosses over. The green is testing one, sloping quite sharply. 17th - The penultimate hole is a sharp dogleg right, longer hitters can cut out the yardage by going over the out of bounds practise area. The fairway is steep all the way to the green. 18th - Difficult finishing hole that requires a good assessment off the tee. The hole doglegs to the right but woodland prevents players from cutting the dogleg off. An iron off the tee is a choice for many golfers but leaves a longer second shot in. Lovely hole. The clubhouse is a welcoming one with a bar area, there is a cafe within the clubhouse and a butty van just after the 7th and 16th holes. All in all Walton Hall is a cracking course, like all muni's gets busy on weekends, but I've yet to experience any problems. The course has a very private feel and at £15 a round or so is good value for money.

Have played this course a handful of times over the years. It offers a more sedate challenge than the other "big" municipal at Heaton park in Manchester. If I have any gripes, it's that there are bits of apron around greens which should be designated GUR. The greens yesterday were slow in the extreme. I shouldn't have to wallop the ball with my putter to cross 10 feet of green - come on, greenkeepers, get the mowers out. Flatten the teeing areas a little more, and reduce the OOB on the 17th to make the big shot over the corner look like a serious option. There are some ex-bunkers on the course - return them to their intended state, or plant them out with shrubs, and put some rakes near the greenside bunkers. I only make critical suggestions for courses I actually love playing.

We had a 3 ball on tue 20/03/2007,weather was ok but a bit windy. The course was in fair nick apart from the usual bog half way down the 9th fairway. Most holes were on temp greens but when we played last week there were about 8 normal greens so we were a bit suprised because the course was probably in better condition this week.We didnt mind too much as the green fee was only £8.50.Overall this is a good municipal course which is only going to get better once all the investment begins to show.

I played the course this morning and was impressed by the quality of the fairways and greens. I've not played for some months but felt the course encouraged adventurous play and caught me out a couple of times. Congratulations to the groundstaff.

Recently started playing golf on a regular basis, spend a lot of time at Walton course. Great prices. Well managed with decent fairways and greens. Back 9 definatly requires a cart of you'll be shattered, "I can see my house from here!" Enjoy.

Unbelievable value for money. Greens pre november were 9/10. Thoroughly enjoyable and can't wait to play again. Watch out for practise ground on the right of the seventeenth as it's out of bounds but not well posted.

It has been 5 years or so since I last played Walton Hall and I can honestly say that having played it this week, it has never looked better. The fairways were well cut, the greens immaculate and the look of the course well improved i.e. new paths since I was last there. It is as tough as ever and my favourite hole (the par 3 16th) remains on of the most difficult holes to get near from the back tees. I recommend the trip to Walton to anybody, but be prepared for a long walk!

Best value for money round in the country. VERY long but quite wide fairways. Great variety of holes esp.9-14. If you can shoot a low score here then any other course you play will seem easy. Back 9 was designed by Peter Alliss. If they could keep the hackers off the course it would be in better condition. There are no flat greens here, I've played on lots of private courses and none live up to Walton.

the best municipal in the country.varying difficulty of holes make this a challenging and demanding course.gently starting through the first four and then tough holes at five and six.a nice little par three and then over the road to mount everest.two par fives and then the climb starts through ten and eleven.wow, twelve is a beast that looks more like the big dipper at blackpool.up and down and up and down....etc...etc.then its all downhill through 13 and on to a couple of tough par fours.sixteen is a nice par three before going back over the road to the final two demanding par fours.a great steal at £9 a go(£11 at weekends)with only one drawback,it can get congested but well worth a visit.

Played the course for the first time last week, fairways like carpet, greens like snooker tables and several challenging holes. As arnie would say "I'll be back!".

Ive just discovered why so many of my friends rave about Walton Hall. This has to be the best or at least one of the best municipal courses in the country.Such an abundance of challenging holes that it makes it a joy to play,(even if you'd need a Sherpa on some of the holes instead of a caddy!!).I can't wait to get back to it in a couple of weeks.

I look forward each time I am in the UK to playing Walton Hall with 'our Eddie" and his mates. It is one of the best kept secrets of public golf. Please don't allow it to ever slip into disrepair. That back nine sometimes requires a mountain goat to complete - especially the 12th, but what a nice view !! Try it once, you'll love it forever !!

What an impressive course, lots of character, and at £9.00 it was a steal! considering the amount of traffic that must go through on a weekly basis it was in excellent condition. The buggy at £12.00 was also a bargain it gets you back to the 19th quicker!

Tough Municipal course,by far the best muni i,ve played.\r\nIn summer when all the trees are in full bloom,it turns into one hard Knock.\r\n

This course is always in good condition, especially the greens; better than quite a few nearby private courses. Don't be misled by the relatively easy start (holes 1-4)
