Market Harborough is a typical, Leicestershire parkland course. Even though it is a short course by today's standards, at 6071 yards, and par 70, and sss69 it still is a challenge. The two nines are completely different to one another, as the back nine is the more recent nine, since the course was previously a nine hole course. The front nine is a lot more mature, and some deceptively undulating greens. Make your score on the first nine, as it is easier then the back nine, as i found out when i played. I was -3 gross going through the first nine, but the back nine proved to be much tougher, and finished level par, and off 5, was delighted. The back nine is a lot more exposed then the front, and some tough walks up hills! The last three holes are a testing finish and are sure to have been the graveyard of many good scorecards. The 16th, 430 yards, has a fairway that slopes right to left and is slightly downhill, with deep rough on your left. Then, for your approach, the green has a bunker to the right and water left as well as long, and with the ball always above your feet, which creates a draw, this hole is a real test of nerves. The 17th is 140 yards, downhill par 3, a thin green with water left and bunker right, and a good test with a wedge. The last hole is a great finishing hole. The hole doglegs slightly from right to left, and 404 yards long. Water all the way up the left side makes it a brave man to try and go down the left to leave himself with a simple pitch instead of a mid iron. The green is undulating too! My only gripe about the course is that the par 3's and 5's let the course down. 3 or 4 out of the 5 par 3's are wedges, and all of the par 5's are reachable in 2. Otherwise a good course to enjoy.
