4 reviews of Hobson Golf Club PLC
I started playing golf 18 months ago and during this time have played many many courses across County Durham. I knew I wanted to join a golf club but wanted to make the right decision before parting with my hard earned cash. After playing the Hobson around 6 times, I knew it was the club I should join. Everything taken into consideration, the Hobson was by far the best choice. It is a very frindly club, good clubhouse, excellent pro shop and a very nice course. The course is a good test for all golfers without being too difficult. The greens are in very good condition and many of them are elivated which adds an extra challenge. I would recommend the course to anybody who wanted an enjoyable, reasonably priced round of golf at a friendly club, or to anyone looking to join an all round excellent club.
I regularly play at Hobson with 2 pals that are long-standing members. It is indeed a friendly, informal (in comparison to other clubs) & good value for money (£12 with a member during 2010, only £15 without). The course is much improved - the front 9 provide a good test (holes 2,5 & 7 are tough Par 4's by any course's standard.) The four Par 3's on the back 9 allow the chance to compile a decent score before holes 17 & 18 (usually played into the prevailing wind & all uphill) mean no round is finished until you reach the 19th !!
I have been a member of the Hobson Golf Club for 25 years now and as a former Junior Liaison Officer, Committee member, Past Captain and at present a Director of the club I take exception to the last review posted by Mr.Brian Jukes, a visitor from Australia. Having read his review and then having interviewed members and our club professional, I feel I have to correct the rather distorted and misleading account of his visit to our club. It is true that Mr. Jukes and his wife did let a group through on the first hole, and it may be that they would have let another group through on the second hole had he completed it. The fact is that we do have a dress code at the club (like most other golf clubs), and it was simply pointed out to him that his footwear (mules and no socks) were not appropriate. When he had arrived at the course, the professional had thought that he was not yet ready for play and would be changing his footwear prior to going onto the course. All of Mr. Jukes subsequent problems arose because of his very aggressive and objectionable reaction to the situation. According to witnesses he was outspoken and rude to members and the club professional. Certainly he was treated with respect and consideration. It is a shame (using his own word) that he does not treat others in the same way. His green fees were reimbursed in full. The final damning words came form his brother-in-law who returned to the course the following day to apologise for his behaviour.. Incidentally, his brother-in-law as I understand it is a member of a neighbouring golf club - much more traditional - where I am sure Mr. Jukes would have got nowhere near the first tee dressed as he was! Finally I would like to reiterate the fact that the Hobson Golf Club quite rightly deserves it's reputation of being one of the friendliest and welcoming of golf clubs in what is a very friendly and welcoming area of England. The course was a municipal course until 5 years ago, when the membership took over the management of the course and the clubhouse. It is generally recognised in local golf circles that there has been considerable improvement in the condition of the course over that period because of the increased investment. Although it is now a private club,we do however maintain an element of pay-and-play, and welcome visitors and visiting parties on any day of the week (visitors need to book at weekends). The fact that most choose to return is evidence of the quality of the course and the hospitality on offer.
As a long term member of this club I find it to be one of \r\nthe most friendly and well run Golf Courses in the North East \r\nof England. The course it self is a well set out course which \r\nis designed to provide a stern test to even the most capable of \r\ngolfers, due to it's length (Some very long par 4's)tree lined \r\nfairways, thick rough and strict par of only 69, can be on \r\nwinter tees and greens for long periods of time during the winter, \r\nbut reduced green fees are offered, in the hight of summer for the \r\ncost of a round the course can be one of the nicest in the area \r\ndespite it's municiple tag. You will find all the members are very \r\nfriendly, our Proffesional and his assistants are allways on hand \r\nto help, the professionals range of equipment is second to none in \r\nthe area, Saturday Morings and afternoons during the summer are \r\nrestricted due to club competitions between 7am - 10.30am and 1pm \r\nand 3.30pm. To sum up and excelent course well worth a visit in the \r\nsummer.\r\n
